It is such a fascinating thing that everybody pretty much seem to find chillies to be slow this year.
Being my first time growing them I have no clue what the norm is, but, beside what I hear on the forum, several friends in Italy and Spain too are telling me that their chillies are developing slower than usual.

It must take lots of work and planning to keep plants happy so close to the shore, between winds and high salinity in the air!

All closed off. I was tying the broad beans closer in and realised a lot of well filled small pods already near the bases. Lovely!

Nothing more to be done now; yes the gales are an issue but never noticed any issues re salinity, so maybe the high rainfall? I was up in Orkney a decade so learned ways to cope and it becomes automatic, second nature . Like seeing the warnings and acting on them.

        Ramping up now.

That's a relief to hear about other peoples' slow chilli growth. Mine are looking rather pathetic but will keep a while longer.

For me the cayenne (finger) shaped chillies are always the first to show flowers and they are both around 18-24" tall. My Shineybrids (fruit points up) and ring of fire (fruit points down) are both well into flowering and fruit has formed on some and may even be ripe by this time next month.

The reapers, ghosts, habaneros, devil's tongue on the other hand are not anywhere near flowering and are not much taller than the cayennes nor as tall as they usually are at this time of year. They probably won't get their first flowers until August or September.

Slow going but worth the wait :)

I'm lucky enough to have both Bath and Shower, but you could, Sheal, always get one of these:heehee:

It must be due to either coronavirus or global warming - or Brexit! :heehee:

Fed the chicken, watered the greenhouse plants then did the most important job...... took the hot tub / spa out of storage as we're expecting a mini heatwave next week. :giggle:

Weeding the lawn. The nasty buckthorn tree managed to drop several hundreds of berries before I got the darned thing chopped down. And I know I probably knocked more to the ground when I was cutting up the branches. But, I know it is a one time deal for this particular invader and there are so many seedlings that I have set a goal of 3 square feet to get weeded each time I go out as it is also over 90f and the weeds are in a sunny spot.

Lots of shady jobs to tinker with too. :)

Putting my trust into the day's forecast of dry weather before the evening I dragged the four 13' long Scaffolding Boards from the Driveway, along the side passage and onto the East side of the Patio. I found that you can't bend Scaffolding Boards around tight corners:nonofinger::heehee: but managed to manoeuvre all four around the end of the side passage. without doing any damage to any plants, and put them on top of each other to wait while I build extension supporting frames for the overlapping lengths of the Scaffolding boards.
After a mug of tea and session of sitting and thinking to confirm my original plan I took the pots off the top tier and placed them out of the way. I'm trying to make the job of extending the original length of the wooden bench as easy as I can so I laid one of the 13' long Scaffolding Boards on top of the original board of the top tier and then, after getting it in the right position screwed it onto the board underneath. I now need to built 2 support frames for either end of the boards where they extend beyond the original lengths.

                      upload_2020-6-20_19-40-43.png

After that it's a case of raising the second tier up in height by 12" with new support frames, placing one of the new Scaffolding boards on it, and then doing the same with the 3rd and 4th tiers. The whole thing has to be strong and sturdy to support the weight of the pots without making the boards sag over time so I'll be using lots of screws, metal angles, 4" X 2" lengths of wood cut to the required lengths. The new Irises will be delivered around the 20th/24th of July so it will be good to have the extended bench finished and trial pots put in place before they arrive to give me an idea of what the new 4 tiered bench will look like. With luck, and some warm dry weather, I should have everything done by next weekend. while also starting cutting the 48 12' long pieces of timber and creocoting them ready to make them into new panels for the East fence.

Covered up a lot of the blueberries with fleece so that the black birds don't eat the fruit. Got hubby to order some more heavyweight fleece it's the only sort that will keep for years, the thin stuff ripes easily.

Been there, done that @ARMANDII. As a youngster my weekly bath was in one of those as we didn't have a bathroom back then. Horrible in the winter, being sat in front of an open coal fire to try and stay warm. :frown: :)

I've started work on weeding and grass seeding the 3ft high bank that runs across the end of my back garden. Not the easiest of places to work with barbed wire at my back - there because the field behind is used for cows.

In April I had some major soakaway work done for my septic tanks but until now priorities and weather have delayed the task. Now I have to weed it all before sowing. :frown:

Ah I would LOVE one of those! I have neither bath nor shower. The bathroom basin and the kitchen sink; as my life started in the back streets of Wigan so it will end on a small island! This is a council property, what they call a demountable dwelling. There used to be a shower that worked apparently but the council workers who were here once, promised me a BATH. As I get free hot water when the stove is lit; bliss. But nearly 4 years on... Same reason I have a new washing machine never used; getting workmen to come out is so hard you give up trying. With the new gas cooker they wanted E350 to connect it. The cooker cost E250. I got someone here to do it; illegal but what can you do? True saying is you can get used to anything. All is well
