Well no gardening today in the wind. For some strange reason I started searching the freezer, realised there were young icebergs, so today is being spent defrosting, needing an ice pick! Old freezer and makes much ice and already nearly done.

I've got to defrost my freezer but i only do it once a year and i like to do it in September ready to put the Christmas food in. I got a ice scraper to do that, because it's a upright one i put casserole dishes filled with hot water in it to make it melt faster.

Your freezer must be related to ours . It's the chest freezer that has never been de-iced since we bought it a few years ago. I couldn't find the scraper that came with the freezer so used a plastic cake spatula. We never make cakes so don't know why we have it . Fifteen minutes later, after an aching arm and back, it was all done. :)

We also have an upright one in the kitchen. It's sold as a self defrosting freezer and does fairly well. We don't get any frost on the inside but we did have a problem with it not working properly after a power cut - the temperature wouldn't go cold enough. So I contacted an engineer who said that I shouldn't believe the advert saying it's self-defrosting. He said that the inside defrosts OK but over a period of time the pipes that carry the gas at the back gradually get clogged with frozen particles and needs defrosting. He said that there is no need for him to come out and charge us and that we should empty the freezer and give it ten hours for the pipes to defrost. He was right :blue thumb:. He said that it would be a good idea every winter to defrost it when we could keep all the frozen stuff piled in the garage/shed etc. on a very cold night.

Ah fellow sufferers! This freezer cost E10 second hand ( or as they say here, "preloved") back in 2006. It freezes up fast. Just now all the contents are out and am waiting for the last icebergs to melt enough to be tackled. I think this is the first defrosting since I came here... nearly 4 years! Is that a record! Some interesting finds. I really use it mostly for the chickens for the cats. As I can only shop every two weeks it is a huge help. There will be some unusual meals this week. The icebergs are huge.

One iceberg to go and yes, hot water in bowls in there. Will have abandon it soon as I need to rest etc. Which is why it never gets done.

Today we have a State funeral here in Mayo; for a Garda shot dead on duty earlier this week. A shocking event, and he was known and loved hereabouts.

I've got 2 chest freezers upstairs just for the fruit that i grow. Originally they were for the frozen raw dog food but as i changed them on a dried food the freezers were used for the fruit. Had them for about 6 years and never been defrosted but the ice is starting to form around the top inside.

WOW! Maybe chest freezers are better than uprights? This one was solid ice in places. The bottom compartment especially. I finally managed to free the iceberg with a large knife...…. ALL DONE... some interesting meals in the offing

I need to say in its defence that we bought it second hand in 2006 and I have had nine house moves since then with it, including an open ferry and a ride on a tractor trailer on rough roads....

Glad that you got it done @Islander77
With my upright freezer the ice seems to be more up the top.

Using knives have to be careful not to pierce the wall of it, but i used to do it, until one day my hands were so cold that i didn't feel the knife going through my hand, but it wasn't very bad.
The only trouble with chest freezers it's a bit difficult reaching the bottom.

@Islander77 I have an upright freezer that needs defrosting about once every 18 months. I think they need defrosting more often because it is much easier to stand there with the door open peering at the frozen contents in order to figure out what might work for supper tonight! I use a large picnic cooler to store the food whilst defrosting. I also use a large pot of hot water. Just sit it on one of the shelves and about an hour later, the ice starts dropping off all the shelves.

Both of my refrigerators are side by side and luckily they are frost free. The only ice in those is the cubes they make. :heehee:

With my upright freezer when i want to defrost it i put towels on the floor and hubby gets the five drawers out still with all the contents in and puts them on the towels. Then i get duvets on top and blankets, that stops everything from defrosting until I've got all the ice off.

That is interesting @Logan . I cannot removr the shelves in mine which would definitely make it easier to clean. Each shelf has a grid of tubing on it's bottom side where the coolant circulates from the main line. So no knives or things can be used.

I didn't know that some freezers were like that, mine is at the back outside it. Perhaps you could get some boxes to put things in then do the same as i do. Mine is about 25 years old, how old is yours?
