    Hi

New to container gardening and feeling a bit frustrated by a lot of web-sites that give very confusing information. Hoping that life is simpler here!

In only my second year of container gardening, and my attempts at creating an oasis have been somewhat thwarted by Covid-19. Now, my little back yard is calling out for some TLC and I'm looking for fellow potters. Yes, I know that most plants start out in pots but my plants have to live exclusively in pots as I have no soil. None.

Please let there be some other potties out there.

Welcome to the forum @Potty gardener ! I use a fair number of pots. It's a forgiving way to grow. If they get too much sun, move them. Easy peasy. I also like the next step up, raised beds and some of those trugs on legs and at waist height can be pretty dandy to. The only difference between growing in pots, other than the size of the area, is that the pots do dry out faster and need watering more often. Particularly if it is windy.

What type of plants do you want to grow. And knowing what your growing conditions are is helpful as what I am able to grow might be totally different than your possibilities.

Thankyou- I'd like to grow some trees, but not fruit trees- just to lend some height and interest. I have a very sunny south facing yard that is pretty sheltered from the wind.

I lived in Sheffield for a long time them moved to Nottingham but there's no place like home- especially when home is Yorkshire! Only been back 18 months so only just got round to thinking about gardening.Luckily my plot is small and sunny!

I do class Barnsley as home now even though I was born a Wakefield lass, so I know what you mean. I think Yorkshire folk are so friendly. Your plot sounds lovely.

I do like my little yard- last year I painted the ghastly brown walls with white and blue paint- looks very mediterranean! I planted plenty of hanging baskets as the previous owners had left lots of brackets. I also grew some veg in a raised bed trug, and installed a water butt.

This year, due to Covid I have been able to do very little except sit out there surrounded by sunshine! I have been shielding for health problems and someone very kindly brought me some colourful planters. My daughter who lives down south sent me some 'pot luck' plants including a spindly acer, ivy and some ornamental grass so I have done some 'gardening' in the past few weeks.

I'd love to hear about your garden now! What do you grow,if anything, in pots?

@Potty gardener sorry you had to shield for health reasons, I hope you have kept well, glad you were safe. Your garden sounds wonderful. In our back garden I only grow in pots except for the laurels and honeysuckle, because 2 of our little dogs don’t like plants in the ground and dig them up:scratch: in the front garden we have plants in the ground though. It the pots we have mainly marigold (which I planted with my grand children pre lockdown so unfortunately except via FaceTime they haven’t got to see them grow) and sunflowers the same, a succulent, lavender, blueberry bushes, apricot tree and in the corner clematis, in the greenhouse cucumber peppers and tomatoes.

I lived many years in Yorkshire. Mostly in Sheffield with sojourns in the Dales. But I am by birth a Lancashire lass. Well Wigan was Lancashire when I was born although the border has now migrated it to Greater Manchester. And Warrington where I grew up was Lancashire but is now Cheshire. Resident in many UK places though and now Ireland so no affiliation anywhere except where home is now.
My home is wherever I am.

Yes, shielding has kept me very well thanks and coming home to be near family has helped too. I have had three gardens in my life, this one is certainly easier! I love honeysuckle and clematis but climbers will be next years project I think- I should really plant the lavender seeds my daughter gave me but I keep forgetting! Lavender would be happy here for sure.

Thank IMG20200605155009.jpg IMG20200605153940_01.jpg you for the photos- lovely to see the green. My front space is just concrete but from my window I look out on lots of trees and green space, which I refer to as my front garden except everyone walks their dogs on it! Sorry made a mess of posting these!
