You didn't need to do that but thank you. When one site is saying mileage is about 100 kilometers and another a 1000 it's not helpful, even though a rough idea is all I wanted.

 

Yes @Sheal it is a big province. My granddaughter now lives about 9 hours from me and that is not even near the top of the province. But there is a lot of land up there that is not habitable for humans without Inuit skills. I was fascinated by how quick the trains got me from one city to another whilst visiting England and had to keep reminding myself that the distances weren't like home.

Down here in my "town" of 180k people we are pretty much side by each as in the suburbs over there. I don't mind it as I like my conveniences too.

I used to pop over the border when our dollar was almost par about twice a month but now the exchange is crazy expensive and of course with the '19 curse, closed anyway, I haven't been there for 6 months.

Covid has certainly changed the world. Alarming. Or is it the governments taking advantage of the ability to control us that is like being in a sci fi horror? Time Machine... go to the siren ..

 

I rec'd a letter from HM.GOV. National Shielding team. I take it that this was the department that phoned me one morning, informing me that I was considered vulnerable regarding the Covid virus. Throghout the period, I've had nowt from my GP. I had already been confined to barracks (home) by my daughter. That began around February. I have kept the forum upto date since. After many attempts to order groceries on line. Amanda rang Tesco. Nice chap checke the list and neither she or me were on the official list of priority persons.

Many thanks to members for their help and advice. I did self register, but left the ordering to Amanda. Since then Tesco have provided a great service and a much lower delivery charge.

Back to todays letter. Quote. We understand that your GP or hospital specialist has reviewed your medical record and have advised that you are no longer considered to be at the highest risk of severe illness from coronavirus. Etc.

Delivery of medicines wil now end and any food parcels etc. You can still use online shopping slots.


Wowee! Yet another cock-up with the wording of such documents. So. In the list of do & don'ts etc.

1. I remain an oldie coming upto 81 Vulnerable.
2. I have not yet been given the all clear from the cancer. Next appt. changed to September.
3. My appt. for 2.July for the cardiac dept has been changed to a phone consultation on the 3rd.

So does that mean. I can go out and about, act like a perfect prat, as so many are doing and convince myself. I AM SAFE?.

I believed we were in the 21st century. The world seems to be going backwards.

I assume your granddaughter isn't a gardener @CanadianLori. I live in a cooler part of Britain, I don't particularly like heat but I couldn't live in a cold climate.

Yes, it doesn't take long to move around England or Britain for that matter. It's a different kettle of fish when daily commuting in England. Many years ago I used to commute to London every day for work, and finding a train that was on schedule was nigh on impossible. I don't suppose it's any better now.

My daughter has the same problem from the Vancouver area. She usually hops over the border to pick up the things she can't buy in Canada, or again due to the virus, items that have disappeared from sale on the internet. She recently asked us to send her a particular make of shower gel she uses that had become unavailable. I bought 6 bottles at around £12.00 total but the postage was frightening! £60.00 they cost to send. And then almost a month before she received them. I don't understand why mail takes so long to get there, it's not the same on the reverse journey.

 

One hand doesn't know what the other hand's doing @Mike Allen. It's down to us to use our common sense on whether we would feel safe out and about.

It is easy for me. ( I live on a small offshore Irish island) I did get an official letter from our wonderful local community volunteers telling me to stay home etc. ( I am 77) but as I have CFS/ME my immune system is down so I never go among folk and am all but housebound now. I have been getting groceries etc delivered from a very friendly supermarket ( by ferry as we have no shop) fortnightly for 2 years and supplement with eg Holland and Barrett. We have designated volunteers who also collect prescriptions and get new gas bottles etc. No need for any medical or official letters as the age alone is the qualification. NB my GP? They don't believe in CFS /ME .. so my age alone is my safeguard. The UK ( my homeland) always were bad at red tape; one reason I came to Ireland!)

 

I'm ziplining on the Canadian side only. I don't believe they have anything like it on their side. Besides, if it did zip from one country to the other, it would take the fun out of it by having to stop and talk to border agents halfway across

The Rainbow Bridge (into Buffalo) and Whirlpool bridge (into Niagara Falls, NY) both cross over to the states. I use the Whirlpool because it is exclusive to Nexus card holders and a fast process. It is a two tier bridge, the top being for trains. Really cool when one goes over and you're halfway across

Today I am going to the pub for an hour to say hello to friends I haven't seen for nearly 4 months because of this evil virus There are now only 15 cases in my town. And they are supposed to be under quarantine I'll keep my distance and be careful.

Europe is so fascinatingly small. I have accidentally slept through Belgium twice- missing the culture, architecture and languages so different from the neighbouring states. The micro states like Vatican are invigorating, just imagine that you have to cross a national border to buy potatoes as the only shops in Vatican are a tabacchaio that sells cigarettes, stamps, sweets and salt and some bookstores.

Finland is pretty big so it's common to drive 6 hrs to the summer cottage for a weekend and then back. The UK is conveniently cosy with excellent train and bus services which we have used a lot. A bit over an hour train journey to Edinburgh through a most lovely landscape of fields and the coast.

My cousin moved to Rovaniemi in Finnish lapland to study, and was amazed again with the different sense of distances. He met a neighbour in a bar and was invited for a coffee, "100 km that way, just pop in any time". Pregnant women go to the hospital a week ahead of the due date, and kids are either collected daily in school buses or live in boarding schools.

Very odd way of living to understand even for a native who has grown up in the capital.

 

Afternoon Sir, The Portuguese are baffled by this. We have one of, or the lowest numbers in Europe. It all seems to stem from a few spikes, particularly in Lisbon and 19 Parishes there have been put back to the last stage and the Metro area has tighter measures only permitting 5 people to gather and eateries/bars with limited hours. There has been a spike in Alentejo at a nursing home and one at a Scout campsite. There was also one in Algarve at a party for 15 which turned out to be party for 100+... so far there are 119 cases, including 19 children who were not at the party.

Our numbers prove our worth and the UK is welcome here, much to the dismay of some. Here are our numbers for Friday ... I don't have yesterday's yet.

"DGS Covid-19 Report


The Directorate-General for Health (DGS) announced this Saturday the existence of 1,561 deaths and 41,189 cases of Covid-19 in Portugal, since the beginning of the pandemic.

The number of deaths rose by six compared to Friday, while the number of infected people increased by 323, which corresponds to an increase of 0.8%.

There are 442 inpatients, 15 fewer than yesterday. 70 are in Intensive Care Units, three more compared to Friday.

The number of recovered cases rose from 26,633 to 26,864, plus 231

All new deaths were recorded in the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, which totals 463 fatalities."

Algarve had no new cases Friday.
