Hello from my N London terrace!

Hi all,

I am an absolute beginner gardener with a terrace in N. London, experimenting with container gardening during lockdown. The technique so far has been buy something pretty and shove it in a pot and see what happens...

But now I'm into it I'm enjoying growing things, and I have loads of questions for you all! Looking forward to learning more

Welcome to GC, for container gardening, I would suggest you start with the thriller, filler, spiller method.

 

Thank you. I just read up on that following your post. I think I am doing ok for thriller (fuchsia, geranium, daisy things), and spiller (ivy and was just given a trailing petunia) but no clue where to start with filler. Last year, I planted nasturtium but it was massive and ended up taking over. Any advice for filler with a little colour?

Fillers can be upright lobelia, Diascia, there are the bedding Euphorbia, usually called diamond frost or the likes, the Ipomea sweet caroline etc, are a great for contrast fillers, there are even a range of mini Heuchera called little cuties, originaly bred for a house plant, but after trials it was more suitable for container planting, also great for colour contrast, theres one called Blondie, which has red/mauve leaves and a cream flower that works well, some grasses work well too, I have even used Gallardia and Coreopsis as a filler, you can mix bedding and perenial. Once used Schizanthus in with grasses, looked great (I shall try that again next year).
