Not only do they seem to be, I think that they have. I did a bit of maths earlier, comparing Sweden to the UK. The population here is roughly 10,3 million. The UK has a population of roughly 65 million. In other words, there are 6,3 times as many people there as there are here.

Current death toll here is 5500. Multiply that by 6,3, and the answer is 34 650. The death toll I saw for the UK yesterday was something around 44 000. That seems to be far higher than it should be. That could prove the theory of overcrowded countries being more at risk. One thing that both countries have in common is that we have had the 2 metre social distancing rule. Could it be that more people in the UK have ignored that rule than they have here? After all, 2 metres is the same distance everywhere, is it not? Or was it simply not possible to adhere to?

A theory, referring to those people that broke lockdown, and spread the virus. We're they in fact stupid and showed no regard for others, or was there another reason that is more deeply rooted in the British psyche?

Back in 1939, the British people said that we want to keep our freedom, gave the Agincourt salute to Adolf and his mates, and carried on as best they could. Are they now saying the same? In other words, saying we want our feeedom, ignored the lockdown by giving the same salute to the virus, and carried on as normal?

 

I think you need to look at a lot of things, just doing the straight maths is not going to work.
You need to take into account inner city living conditions, percentage of ethnic minorities, overall wealth.
Add to that that nearly half the deaths here were in care homes, basically where the government and NHS were sending know cases back to die and infect the whole home and you can see it's not just down to the individual.
Lots of questions will be asked at some point and comparisons made and there will be lots of people in charge with sloping shoulders.

 

I agree with @Sandy Ground here. For ease I do my comparisons at 7:1. I am sure overcrowding is a problem. Also the British upper-crust attitude and like Americans of nobody will tell me what to do. Bearing in mind me saying this ... a Brit with an American husband. Attitude has a lot to do with it.

A great proportion of our deaths are the elderly, two yesterday in Central who were 88 and 94. Portugal has a high proportion of elderly folk, like Italy and Greece, having lived a good healthy life.

But now children are being affected ...

The number of children infected in a kindergarten in Caldas da Rainha has increased to six, the mayor said yesterday “From the results known, there was a test that was positive for a child who attended the kindergarten and thus totals six infected children,” Fernando Tinta Ferreira, president of the Câmara das Caldas da Rainha, told Lusa.

As part of the outbreak originating in a kindergarten, there are still seven more infected people (two educators and a driver) and four family members of the children.

 

There are so many differing factors between nations that yes, it's almost impossible to rate a country's handling of the virus.
Here's our current statistics. Population 37 million, Accumulative confirmed cases to date 106,167 , Deaths 8,711 . Lots of us live in large cities or towns and then there are remote areas so even within our country we cannot compare regional responses.

"Rishi Sunak has unveiled an "eat out to help out" discount scheme, as part of big spending plan to rescue the economy from the coronavirus-induced recession.

The Chancellor said participating restaurants would be able to offer half price meals and be reimbursed by the Government within five working days."

 

Personally,the way I see it is whether people are going to be bothered to go out with all the restrictions?

I'm not bothered about going out and doing whatever I want to do, but with all the restrictions it makes what should be a pleasure into a PITA.

 

Can I (THE TAX PAYER) go into a restaurant and then eat half of someone's meal because I've already paid for it

I haven't been out for a meal for well over 45 years and I aint going to start now

 

First there was 'Help to Buy', now 'Help to Dine', whatever next, 'Help to Holiday' with half your (full board?) accomodation costs paid for out of taxes? Bet it wont include those who go to cheapo campsites and take their own grub and booze.

Sounds like 'helicopter money' to me, but I don't seem to be under a flightpath.

 

This 50% eatery bill paid by the Gov't - as cafe's have to apply for the scheme - people will pile into the cafe's who have joined up. They'll have to do something about social distancing as well.

The cafe we normally go to - would only have a handful of people in it if it has to comply with the 2m rule. So probably won't open even with half of the bill paid by Boris. This scheme will benefit the large eateries with loads of outside seating space.

 

And large eaters!

 

Apparently only 3 days a week.

 

All this talk of eateries I've had to go and get a sauage sandwich, now all gone
