What Jobs Are We Doing In The Garden Today 2020

I don't have to persuade hubs....well yes I do ....persuade him Not to dig up more lawn!!! I have enough borders....but he has selective hearing!!! Do I really,really mind.....? Noooooooo!!

 

We’ve had it for years, and it was sold as a round BBQ/brazier, so has a lid, and is on wheels. TBH it doesn’t work well as a BBQ, because of the high sides, but is fantastic as a moveable brazier!
(It came from Carrefour, a French-Belgian supermarket chain, around 10 years ago, if that is of help)

 

Like Nigel said, very small squashes and unusually shaped too
The plants in itself is pretty much a courgette, as for spread and appearance.
At least, that is what the Sunburst variety looks like.




James Wong is very fond of them, so I decided to give them a go.

I have been googling for braziers too. However, I cannot find anything decently priced that will be reasonably tall and have a fine mesh, like the one Sian showed.
Many cheap ones look like a sure way to roast all my produce in one go, without bothering with harvesting it first.

 

Gosh that takes me back @Sian in Belgium ....we use to have a huge Carrefour here. When hubs was a student he had a job there. It's now an equally huge Asda.

 

I know Carrefour from Italy, but I have never seen branches in the UK.
I see what you mean about it not being very suitable for BBQ. Some of those I saw have a grate one can fit mid height to keep the embers closer to the grilling area.
The wheels look like a very good idea to move it about.

That happens to me quite often as well.
Perhaps it is just a bit of depression?

When I am depressed, I do feel like sleeping a lot and everything I need to do feels daunting, including gardening and other things which I enjoy. I end up listing in my head all the chores I have to do, no matter how small, and slowly it starts feeling like a mountain, and very futile.
But when I do eventually get to do some, then I feel much better.

This said, I try to keep my interests varied. I noticed over the years that I can get very obsessed with specific hobbies, whether it is music, gardening or other things.
If I do only one thing for long, it ends up taking too much head space, and it can feel dull to the point of abandoning it for quite a while.
Conversely, if I keep several things going on a regular basis, generally at least one will give back something every single day.
For instance, if I play violin and I feel disgusted with the result, which is sadly often the case, perhaps something I planted weeks ago might be starting doing well.
If my plants are full of aphids and bindweed, which this year is sadly often the case, I might nail something on violin which was giving me an hard time before..

Of course, some days nothing seems to work, but if something good happened the days before that keeps me going somewhat.

 

Mitre saw swapped for my table top saw and YES, I had to clear Carol's plants off my work bench again!!! It ain't a plant stand for goodness sake...... Anyway, Carol now happy running riot with my belt sander! I do love her, honest.

 

Simply gathering and eating; too unwell to do more so that is grand. Oh and draped a huge pieces of crimson curtain organza over my precious peas and beans as I think magpies stole most of the purple peas. ( no netting) The cats are on magpie alert. I had never heard or had magpies here in all my years on the island as we have no trees.

Oh and admiring my glorious flowers and the scenery.

Been potting on the wallflowers done 150 so far

 

Well its been raining most of the day again, I've been in the GH tidying up a bit and moving plants around, still got a lot of plants in the GH but I am getting there with giving them away / planting out. Potted on my echincea pallidia and nepeta walkers low I've got quite a few now.

Weekend was more productive got out and about on the bike and went to a few Garden centres, found some agastache coral amongst the masses of pots / weeds, I've been looking around for a bit on the internet to no avail I given up hope for this year, but they just caught my eye and I weren't even looking for them .

Planted the agastache out and moved a Heuchera , dead headed all the roses and weeded the borders .

The purchase of the house has gone through today as well , the garden and the house I suppose is mine now

Yesterday I tried to get quite a bit of gardening done, as we had rain forecast for today.

I planted some of my young orange thyme, and Russian sage. Just the Echinops left to plant now....
A little late, but I pruned my deutzia following its flowering earlier this year, bundling up the cut stems ready for garden waste collection today. I know it should have been done last month, but it’s still got the tail-end of flowers opening! I wanted to get the height of the shrub down, so that we can enjoy the Buddleia that’s just coming into flower behind it.
I also mowed some of the grass that’s kept short (as distinct from the “wild” area next to the pond and raised vegetable beds). I would have done more, but I was running out of petrol, and didn’t want to go out to get some.

I needed a shower after all that, to soothe the scratches on my arm from the deutzia, and get all the bits of dead flowers out of my hair!

today it’s only now starting to drizzle, so I’ve managed to do a bit of a blanket-weed and dead leaf removal from the pond, picked some french and runner beans, some mangetout and a green courgette, weeded around the newly-planted climbing iceberg rose, cut some spent flower stems from the dianthus armeria, scattering the seed on another area of flower border, along with some poppy seeds. I also deadheaded the coreopsis plants that are enjoying the cooler weather, and tidied up the pulled-out lychnis coronaria, that came out to make space for the plantings yesterday.

Now it’s time to get on with all those indoor tasks I’ve saved up for this rainy day - c’mon, rain!!

 

Try to pick some more fruit this afternoon after the plants have dried a bit from yesterday's rain still got a lot of blueberries and the blackberries are coming on well.
