    Yes, but some winemakers use a more refined, even cheaper method. Going from memory here, but I think it's like this - Put 1L of juice into a 1.5L squash bottle, shake to oxygenate, add one sachet of yeast (ec-1118 works well for this) and leave somewhere warm. When fermenting vigorously, pour 50% into wine must and put bottle in fridge to lay dormant. When more yeast is required, remove bottle from fridge, top up with juice until fermenting vigorously, pour 50% into wine must and keep repeating.

    This is probably a better method if making smaller batches than multiples of 6 galls at a time.

      That sounds good, any idea how long you can leave it dormant in the fridge, only I don't make large amounts, just when certain stuff is in season.

      I remember a similar method to that that bakers use to grow yeast but obviously using flour.

          I think some homebrewers have kept their yeast going for around a year, but you'd need to change to quick maturing supermarket juice wines after the likes of blackberries and elderberries have finished.

            Thing I wondering is does the yeast actually need a fruit to multiply, could it not be grown in basic sugar and water?

              It requires other nutrients. The greater the sugar content, the greater need for additional chemical nutients. It's generally only distillers who reduce their must to the bare minimum for fermentation, as basically all they want is the alcohol, to which they add flavourings post distiĺlation to replicate various spirits.

                    They taste so flippin awful, like dry twigs, I'm not surprised. Not even our hens will eat them.

                      I'm still not sure what the difference is, unless its those strange things you get in Mac diddles that are just a crispy stick without any spud inside.
                      The yanks used to do what they called french fries and they were chips.

                          I'm not disputing the figures as you've obviously got them from the packets but it doesn't seem logical to me. :scratch: The only apparent difference in the ingredients would seem that the fries would have more oil taking up the weight. So does potato have more calories than oil? :dunno: Bought chips sometimes have a coating of other ingredients that may make a difference.
