I have 2 Laptops and both had Windows 10 installed when it first came out,..what i didn't ask for was Microsoft Edge it was included in Windows 10,..having managed to kill it on one Laptop by opening ' Process Manager ' immediately on ' Start ',..then ending its process as often as possible resulted in Microsoft Edge appearing in my ' Revo Uninstaller ',..so it allowed the uninstall,.. then a question from Microsoft as to why did i persist in uninstalling,..answer was,.. Intrusive/Pushy/Not User Friendly/forced upon me.

So happily its goodbye Microsoft Edge.

Sorry. Mike can't respond to that one. Computers and modern technology is way out of my comfort zone.

However what I do ask is. Why are we computer users imprisoned by the stars and stripes. BH lets be honest. Here in the UK. We have some of the greatest scientific brains.....(well GC has got me) Mike....exit stage left. LOL. So why are we still prisoners of Microsoft etc.??????

I'm not very computer literate but I have three other browsers available rather than Edge. It has stopped asking me whether I want it to be in charge :heehee:

What I do get is an occasional pop up telling me I should upgrade my security as people can use the computer camera to see what I'm doing. It then offers to show me what it can see. Being paranoid I cover the camera except when I'm using it for Zoom/Skype etc. so it shows me a blank view. Then it offers to stop this unauthorised use of my camera for a small upgrade price. :loll:

I don't have smart (I cal them smarta..e) features in my home. No smart meter and my TV, which is a smart TV, keeps trying to tell me that the camera isn't working (I have it locked down inside the TV) and all the smart features need turning on. :nonofinger:

I admit that smart features may be useful in later life when I may have difficulties doing things :old:

I bought a new computer couple years ago. Windows 10 operating system and Edge was the included default thingy! I hated it and still do. I installed Google Chrome. I tend to flip between the 2 but whenever I open Chrome the computer asks me if I want to set Chrome as my default browser therefore automatically taking you there whenever logging on. If you say yes Edge wont show itself again but will i assume still be lurking and taking up space. If disc space not an issue then no worries. Never thought of uninstalling edge as assumed it wasnt possible but might give it a go now as I want mega space for photos etc. :wallbanging:
@shiney I won't use Skype or anything that requires use of the camera. Paranoid doesn't come close. Permanently covered it wirh a sticker. For the same reason I won't buy a smart T.V and I'd so love one of those 60" contraptions.

@ThePlantAssassin I have installed Chrome, Firefox and Avast Secure Browser. Some times, not very often, Edge asks me if I want to change to itself and tell it, firmly, no! I have plenty of space so haven't bothered trying to uninstall it.

My smart TV has a retractable camera that can't be used if retracted. All other smart features have been switched off - although it has a little moan every so often about it :heehee:. So it's safe for you to get a large TV (all new TV's are, apparently, smart ones).

              Hi,

Think you will find Edge will keep reinstralling itself when you do the Widows updates as its almost an intergral part of w10 like IE was.
Normally you can keep it under control by using the typical settings as shown below.

It is worthwhile keeping as sometimes you can come across the odd site that will not work properly with Chrome or Firefox etc.

@ThePlantAssassin a Smart TV only becomes "Smart" if you connect it to the Internet /your Router, otherwise its works as a normal big screen tv with Freeview etc, no way can anything spy on your then.

@ricky101 ,..great post,..i do likewise so most of what i download comes through my Default Browser and not as it used to be through Edge,..i still wasn't happy that Edge was still working away and slowing down things in the background,..opening up the Task Manager and watching just how much it was updating every time i logged in while my other Browsers only updated when i allowed after they informed me of the update.

Edge came back on one Laptop when there was an update with Windows 10,..however it shows up as being 'Suspended due to slowing down process',..i am happy enough with that.

I do use O&O ShutUp 10,.. with its recommended settings as it stops Microsoft's many ways of using ones internet use for their benefit.

Some of its recommended settings blocked.

@ThePlantAssassin ,..i don't blame you being careful about using the Camera,..i have had a few occasions when on Skype and not using the camera to find i was looking at the person i was conversing with when they didn't know i could see them,..though they couldn't see me,..i can tell you they rapidly covered up the camera,..another member of that persons family had the settings set to View while they were on camera and never changed it back

Did use O&O when we first moved to W10 and there was all the carfuffle about its privacy etc, but shortly after using it, the system started to go off, so had to roll back, and never used it again.

Today, its actually quite easy to view and turn off things, just go into Settings and work your way though each one, though for either method, do some form of backup or System Restore Point first !

@ricky101 Trouble is it would be connected to my router as I use SKY box sets and catch up TV a lot. I'll cover the camera up if I get one!

I bought my current laptop just after Windows 10 was released as my old one had given up the ghost. My current machine had Windows 8 installed and not wanting to tackle that I took up the free offer of Windows 10, which at that time wasn't fully functioning. A bit of a nightmare to start with as at that point there were still a lot of glitches. Once they were ironed out I was quite happy to use Edge and Bing, I still have a couple of problems with it but nothing drastic. I tried changing to both Google and Firefox which were an absolute nightmare regarding compatibility, so I returned to Edge and on the whole I'm happy with it.

Regarding Skype - I'd be absolutely lost without it. Two of my three children live abroad and I haven't seen my son for almost ten years. Compare the four hour video call we had yesterday, free of charge, with the price of a phone call without it? I also get to see him, if not in the flesh. :)

@Sheal ,..Skype is a fantastic facility,..i used it for many years sadly the people i was in contact with have all died since,.. so i uninstalled it.

You certainly would be lost without Skype,..delighted to hear you make the best use of it.

I use Slimjet as my Default Browser as its size is only 247.60 Mb,..i also use Google Chrome its size is 578 Mb,..i don't recall the size of Edge but it was bigger than these,..both of these ask to update,..looking at Microsoft Edge by way of the Process Manager one will see its constantly using up memory,..at a daily rate,..that is my main gripe with Edge,..from the time i enter my password until my computer is ready for the internet takes approx 35 seconds,..i just like to keep it around that timing,..what ever one uses if its good enough and one is happy,..don't change.

I can't help with the Skype problem (works OK on our PC) but we also use Zoom. That was easy to download and works very well.

If you link more than three people on Zoom you are only allowed 40 minutes a session - or you pay to upgrade. I'm too stingy to pay for it so if more than three of us I either limit it to 40 minutes or use Skype.

Hi Mike,..if you had Skype and for some reason lost it,..the remains of it would show when you try to reinstall it,..if you can see it on your Uninstaller then uninstall it,..then afterwards i am sure you will be able to install a new version,..many programs uninstall the old version before downloading a new version,..others ask you to uninstall the old version or disable it as it shows as being not in use but available,..even though something is missing preventing you from using it but they can not see this.
