Stop start on both our Golf and Hyundai i10 can be turned off. My Golf has front censors which when stopped at lights behind another car starts up immediately when that car moves on. Not really necessary as I can see it has moved!!

On the stop start subject, as I approach my allotted 3 score years and ten .... I really do like to stop, the problem is I would prefer not to start again. Is this normal for a man of my tender years?

I have known many younger blokes who stop and don't like to start again; at least if the sport is on TV.

Well, on the brighter side of car technology - - I have a colleague who as a Range Rover which is getting on a bit (about 14-15 years old) and he had a yellow engine light come on the dash. Like most of us, his car stood for quite a while or only did really short journeys over the past few months, and the light appeared when he took his family out for a run down to Beaulieu last week. The local dealer wanted £200 just to look at the car and plug it in, but then he remembered that I have a brand specific computer that I bought to help keep my old car running along.....

I arranged to meet him yesterday, plugged his car in and read the codes - - misfire detected, cylinder 7, with a low incidence rate. Codes cleared, fired it up and it runs as smooth as silk with no light on the dash. Cost of repair, the best price - free.

Just after 01.00 this morning the computer basically packed up. Tried a few times to sort it, but no go. Once up and about again, I switched on. I could access what was on the computer but the internet, zilch. Loads of messages on screen. Ooops problems trying to load this program, etc etc. Modem was indicating a good connection. I rang Virgin and the usual saga. Press one for etc. A quick test was carried out and nil result. A further test and I never heard anymore. So I switched the whole lot off and waited a while.

Switched back on and the modem began it's process. Several messages on screen that despite clicking here and there as directed. Nothing. Then a message. You must sign in to start. Did that. and the message continued to repeat. Then I had to insert the password for the router. Incorrect number. This is printed on the case and a pull out card plus a sticker on my desk. In the end I even considered my old engineers hammer. Best Not. Walked away and had a cupper. In time it had sorted itself and has been working well since then.

What usually is the cause of breakdowns is. I am cited about 20yds between two street cabinets, yet the cabinet to which I am connected is a few hundred yds away. Other cable firms also use this box and it is always my plug that is not replaced.

Currys PC World have a facility called Knowhow, their staff can access your pc remotely and fix any problem you have on your pc while you watch them on your screen, it is available 24/7/365 and worth every penny in my opinion and is only £5 per month, payment can be made by direct debit.

This is a common problem with modems (aka routers) Mike. The modem can only handle some many connections and it will eventually 'freeze' and need to be restarted. Many modems now have a built in function which restarts them automatically at a given time - eg. 3 in the morning when it is not being used.

I've had the same issue here - particulalry with mutliple simultaneous downloads - and the modem freezes. So there is nothing wrong as such with your equipment - its just a feature of modern modems .

These fibre broadband connections - a bit of a con as the final wire from the cabinet to your modem is still copper .
