Achimenes / hot water (bottle ;-) ) plants

    Can anyone give me some advice about growing achimenes. I've wanted to try growing them again for a while (my grandparents gave me a rhizome about 35 years ago).

    So... I just bought a rhizome on eBay, but I'm looking at their growing habits and I don't know whether to plant it now when it arrives, with a view to letting it take advantage of what's left of the growing season, or just put it straight in vermiculite until the spring.

    I would be tempted to wait until next spring.
    I plant mine up in spring time and at the moment they're in full flower.

      Now I'm jealous! ;)

      Do you think the rhizome will cope that long dry? (I suppose bulbs do so probably rhizomes would too.)

      I don't know; when I've bought them it has been springtime and they got planted soon after.
      Mine go dormant October November time and then the "rhizomes" get stored.

      Unless they have come from the other side of the world I find it strange any one has dormant rhizomes at this time of the year.
      Ok not totally dormant but pretty close. :smile:

      I hope it survives having its seasons turned almost upside down. I'm certainly going to do my best to look after it - having a little green shoot arrive through the post today has made my day!
