Hi all, I was given this little rose plant last year by a friend. She said at the time it could be planted outdoors eventually. I know nothing of Rose's and have never grown any. This little plant was repotted a few months ago and has to be watered every 2 days and I feed occasionally. Ive never felt it's been happy. Last night on Gardeners world a lovely lady commented that she put her first rose plant given to her outdoors.
So would this be ok, what position is best and when would be the best time to plant it out.

As you've had that Rose indoors since last year Jasmine, I'd say you've looked after it very well.
I've tried to keep them going inside several times over the years but they've never looked as good as yours even after just 6 months.
I'm no expert on roses but i do have a couple of bonny one's growing in the garden.
They like to spread their roots and I'd guess yours would do well in the big outdoors.
I'd bow to greater knowledge however because i think the smaller varieties can be tricky or at least they have been in my hands.

Hi @JR thank you for replying. I've always called it the nightmare plant in my house :heehee: it has to be watered every 2 days a blooming nightmare for me as most of my houseplants need minimal attention. Its in a South facing window so I suppose that's helped. I did butcher it last year after it flowered :phew: and it wasn't happy for a few months but bounced back I would like to get it out as then I could forget about it for a bit. I have a South facing little plot in the border I could put it. I'm not sure if now is the right time though as the temperature has dropped a little or do you think I should wait until spring. I'm clueless with Rose's. Would appreciate your advice :blue thumb:

Yes, you can plant it out now and a south facing garden is perfect, they like as much sunshine as they can get. When the hole is dug water it well and mix some compost and fertiliser with the soil before back filling. I use blood, fish and bone. Water again once planted. It would be an idea to remove any flowers, this will help the rose to establish it's roots instead of concentrating on producing flowers.

You can give it a partial pruning come November, but any major pruning is usually done late winter before, or as it starts to produce new leaf buds. Potted roses can be planted out any time of year but bare root roses are usually planted late Autumn or Winter.

@JR that's a beauty you have there :wub2: if I end up with anything even slightly close to yours I'll be over the moon.

Yes.. That one is 'Arthur Bell' a very nice sturdy and scented specimen. I was given that by an old neighbour that has since moved away so it's particularly special.
When Phil left he split the rose bush in two, gave me one half, and he took the other..(winter)
We wats app each other a picture of them both each summer now that he's down in Kent.
Good advise from Sheal by the way

I think its lovely when you have a little attachment like that. It's part of what makes gardening special (I think) I'm not sure what my rose plant is called but a dear friend gave it to me last year. That's why I'm trying my best not to kill it off and asking on this forum has been a massive help with many things including this. I'm going to plant it out tomorrow and watch it like a hawk. :th scifD36: Who knows I might end up with my first rose bush :dbgrtmb:

Well, all the advice you've been given has been spot on, Jasmine:love30::thumbsup: It may well be that the rose was treated with a dwarfing hormone and the effects of that treatment is now fading so your rose is better off in the ground.

You couldn't get better advice than that, so take time to get some of the Fertiliser that Sheal recommends before you plant it and that will give the rose a good start. To be honest though, I would only give the rose a very light prune in the Autumn due to it's small size and the fact that the rose could possibly still be using it's leaves to store energy, and for it's very first Spring prune I would only prune it back to, say, four growth buds on the stems. Once you start to see growth on the rose I would use a feed of Tomato Feed weekly from then until the end of August every year.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:s

@Jasmine star It really does look so healthy! Keep us updated when it starts to flower. Last year mine flowered in two halves, if I had flowers on the left, I didn't on the right :rolleyespink: and vice versa. I pruned it last autumn and have put down some ericaceous compost. Wondet what its going to do this year. This was it yesterday.. IMG_20210411_171925_389.jpg
