Hi John, marvelous cannas. I didn't know that cannas can be grown from seeds. Can you advise the supplier, please? I am rarely successful with seeds.

I'm not usually that lucky with seeds either that one was one of ten seeds i picked up from a plant when on holiday last year in spain . I'm sure you'd get reputable sellers of tropical seeds on the internet. Sorry i've not been any help. I'm trying to grow ginger not from seed from the root but not much is happening

Cannas grow fairly well from seed, I think we used to have a specific Canna thread.
Best to just nick the seed to allow it to absorb water otherwise germination can take a very long time with such hard seed.

Ginger from the supermarket needs a fair amount of heat in winter to keep growing.

Most of us prefer to grow the flowering gingers that can go dormant in winter, some are quite hardy and survive some frost out side.

I'm heading back to Oxfordshire at the weekend and I'll check out my seedbox. I should have some seed for Canna paniculata which is very hardy and vigorous. Best of all it terminates freely - even self seeds.

@longk My Canna paniculata, grown from seed you sent me some years ago, is still growing well and has seed pods on it at the moment.

Hi @john mackay I have found the best ginger to use is from specialist indian or chinese supermarkets if you have any near you. It seems to be a bit fresher, and the buds soon start sprouting. I found that fresh ginger from the plant had a much more lemony fragrant smell and of course it is softer and less fibrous. Also worth trying is lemon grass - I have managed that from supermarket supplies, by finding the stalks which have been less aggressively chopped off their roots.

Dear Longk, if by any chance you have some extra seeds of your Canna I would be extremely grateful if you could send some to me. Perhaps some of my seeds could be of interest to you.

              Hi John,
              Your garden looks gorgeous!
It's next to impossible to believe that you are in Glasgow.

Thanks black orchid. Most of the pics recently seem to be of the deck. The cannas and dahlias will be in the greenhouse over the next few days . Will try to keep the banana going as long as possible with a polythene covering and poles from my daughters old trampoline. A temporary measure that worked when i uncovered the banana too early this year:doh:

Can anyone advise me with my canna, not sure where it's come from but a few years ago it just appeared in my border..didn't realise what this red/brown leaved plant was till recently .
Each year grows to 8 inches and had three leaves.it doesn't appear until mid september.then dies off without flowering.

Now I've realised what it is do you think I ought to dig it up for the greenhouse or leave it to do it's own thing in the border?

                    Hi Purple Streaks,
I am not experienced with Cannas a lot, just having them for the second year. Some of them are very small like yours. So I was advised that they should not be planted deep. But I hope more experienced gardeners will advise you when it is better to replant it, now or in spring. It would be nice if you could make a picture of your Canna and post it here.
