    Hello all

    I hope you are well.

I have just had the lawn in the front garden edged using Kandla Grey Setts and the Cotnus which is planted in a corner is now too far back and needs to be moved forward.

It was planted in September 2019 and is approximately 3' tall.

What is the best way to go about moving it?

    Thanks in advance

    Kevin

      Lovely shrub Cotinus.
I would wait until the plant is dormant. November to March.
I'd dig as wide around as practical to save as big a rootball as possible.
When it's ready to lift, ensure the 'new' space is excavated and ready to receive the plant.
Enrich the planting hole with compost if the surrounding soil isn't too special. You can apply a bit of bonemeal, but it's not compulsory.
Bed the shrub in firmly leaving no air pockets and water well.
Then leave the plant well alone until Spring at which time I'd top dress the area with some blood fish n bone.

        Hello @JR

        Thanks for the reply.

The shrub is being moved forward in the same area that it is currently in so the soil will be well cultivated from when the shrub is removed.

        Thanks

        Kevin

        Hello

I am looking at moving the Cotinus 'Grace' this month and was wondering if anyone can estimate how big the root ball of a 1 year old Cotinus 'Grace' is likely to be?

        Thanks in advance

        Kevin

Hi Kevin, at one year old the Continus root ball will be quite small and easy to dig up and transplant. If you've got any fresh compost it won't do any harm to put a spadeful, and maybe a handful of Bone meal, into the new hole for the plant, but it's not that important as the Continus will do well without eitherl

I would leave alone as its a big shrub and will fill the space ..... easily pruned

I want to buy a Cotinus Royal Purple, does it need a full 6 hours of Sun or will it be ok in a partial shady corner - though if I buy a taller standard it will get more Sun anyway ? Looking for advice on this please as would hate to plant it in the wrong place.
