There is a profanity filter built into the forum software that has been drawn up in coordination with the rules, and if you look at those rules you will see that it is against the rules to bypass said filter. If something sits outwith the filter (it is entirely possible that not all words have been included) then they are considered on a case by case basis by the admin team and/or Webmaster as appropriate.

Whilst I will always defend this being a family friendly forum, we also need to be able to have robust discussions and make points in a robust manner which can require expressions that are somewhat stronger but do not descend into actual profanities. If I am wrong in this, I am sure that my colleagues will correct my understanding.

No, I get that bit, @pete. It just seems strange that words considered by most people as higher on the 'profanity scale' are fine because the profanity filter allows them, seems like an odd standard. :noidea:

As mentioned by @pete, that very much depends on the word as many have more than one meaning; equally, I (personally) would argue that if a word is so widely used in more than one form that it is (generally speaking) not a profanity.

I am a member of other forums where a 'b' word that represents a gents 'vegetables' is quite commonly used, as is the word for a bull's excrement, whereas those words are not allowed to be used here - that in itself suggests to me that the profanity filter here is (rightly) geared to be that bit tighter.

I did once test to see what the filter does and it took me a minute to recognize "moo poo" as the translation :roflol:

OK, thanks mate. Not bothered unless the F or C words are used, personally. Just wanted some clarification. :)

There is always a fine dividing line with things like this, hence in this case I am taking my guide from the words and phrases that would trigger the profanity filter the aim is always to keep things suitable for all ages without quashing discussion, and as you know as part of any adult discussion there is often some quite robust language or descriptions used. I will defend to the hilt everyone's right to be offended by a word or a phrase, be that here or elsewhere - - equally though, I will defend to the hilt anyone's right to offend or to use words or phrases that may offend some individuals.

The Admin Team have tried over the years to walk the tightrope of trying to keep up reasonable standards of the use of language where offensive language is kept to a minimum and there is, I think, an understanding by all "Grown Ups" of what is used commonly and what is considered to be really unacceptable and unnecessary. But this subject has been much discussed over the years and really the only realisation/conclusion is........

“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.”

I could not have put that better myself @ARMANDII - my intention was/is never to set out to deliberately offend anyone, least of all @Freddy, however I am also aware that we live in a world where something that offends one or two people won't bother others in the least. If we go through life in abject fear of causing offence with anything we say, then we are essentially quashing free speech.

Latest figures on the vote are 306 - 232 - subject to how many recounts are allowed.

As this is a gardening forum you could use the Portuguese word ... "tomates".

Some of the words used on this thread are not what I would use in front of my family. I know I am old fashioned but I always think "would you say such a thing in front of young children?" If this thread was in the Muppet forum (which comes with a suitable warning) then that's different as having close to the knuckle jokes and strong language. For the sake of losing a long standing member it seems hardly worth trying to defend.
