Begonia petals are excellent in salads. They have a lemon sort of flavour and make the salad look fantastic.

Stalks are also edible and are more like rhubarb. As both petals and stalks contain oxalic acid they shouldn't be eaten if you suffer from gout, rheumatism or kidney stones. so definitely keep off rhubarb if you suffer from any of those.

I got out my loppers to enable me to snip off a chunk of clematis high up on the top of a wall this morning.
Reasonably satisfied with the results, I thought about sweeping up and putting away the loppers, when I saw to my horror, one hand covered with blood!
After cleaning, it turned out to be a deep cut on the edge of my thumb, presumably caused by the pincer action of the loppers catching the fleshy bit of skin!
Gardening is a dangerous occupation isn't it?
Has anyone had a silly accident in the garden?(non too serious, I hope).
I was thinking of starting a new thread, but then thought you may all be very careful and sensible in the garden, unlike me!

I've pruned my 35 year old Buddleia near the Patio right down and spent some of the day using the Pruners to cut the stems into manageable pieces to go into a large garden sack and then put into the Council Green Waste which, unfortunately, won't be collected now until January 2021:doh::wallbanging: I've still got a White flowering Buddleia and a Yellow Globosa Buddleia to prune but I'll wait for a warm, dryer period and put the prunings into several garden sacks to wait until the Green Waste Bin is empty again.
I'm also cutting the Ivy which coats the West fence, and has a lot of thumb thick stems, down at the base to start stripping it out while painting the ends of the cut stems with BrushKiller, so there's more than enough to keep me busy during the coming Winter.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

Strange but true. Cuttintg that flanged area between fingers. For some reason, excess bleeding can take place. Infection can become a problem. Simple as it might seem. If bleeding persists, go to A&E.

Sounds nasty @pattie earlier this year I was pruning the wisteria with my freshly sharpened secateurs. I ended up snipping into the fleshy part of my finger just above where the wedding ring sits - snipped into it but not through the bone. Nearly passed out when I saw all the finger innards! :thud: Healed up ok when I stuck a couple of steri strips on it though.

No gardening due to :rain::rain::rain::rain::rain::rain: and wind and :rain::rain::rain::rain::rain: and wind and so forth. Garden is waterlogged, so too wet to do anything on the days it hasn't rained. Given up the idea of catching up on jobs this winter. The surrounding fields are waterlogged too and large areas of standing water. Found another dead hedgehog in one of the houses, just a baby of around 4-6 weeks :cry3::cry3:. A few weeks back I found an adult dead in the same house. Despite the weather I have a Lavender plant that is coming into flower :hate-shocked::hate-shocked:.

That must have come as a shock @pattie I wonder why you didn't feel it. I hope it will heal soon.

Pity about the hedgehogs @luciusmaximus I wonder why they died, - very sad.

I planted my Tulip bulbs today and repotted some houseplants. I did it all on the kitchen floor - too wet and cold to go outside.

My thumb's ok, having taken off the plaster just now it looks to be more superficial a wound than it first appeared to be.
Some kind soul sitting not a million miles away from me, (a scientist too Mike!) mentioned something about the path of one's artery into that area, which explains all the blood... nice!
Thank you for the concern, appreciated. x
Poor hedgehogs, now that is sad.

Done nothing today but for watching the football its been a miserable day and yesterday and I don't think tomorrow is any better.

Not another thumb injury @pattie :frown: I've caught my fingers in secateurs before but not any real damage. I haven't really had any other bad injures bar one when a small scaffold tower bracket broke while doing a hedge causing me to fall off banging my head on the ladder . Everyone been attacked my roses that will probably the most common injury or a bad back .

Not a lot here as been feeling awful the last couple of days. Did manage to tip a bag of gravel in the bed where the Mediterranean herbs will be going but that's about it
