Hello all and thank you for letting me join your community. Little bit about myself, 54 years young, married with two grown up sons. Pride and joy (other than my sons) is my 12x10 greenhouse and my raised veg bed. Combination of these two and the desire to improve led me to here. Interested not so much in improving soil as trying to create some

Hi David, welcome to Gardeners Corner:love30::thumbsup:

Well, I only grow hardy perennials, David, but we have a lot of knowledgeable veg growers and allotment owners who will willingly swap experiences and give advice to anyone who needs it.

For that, you might have to buy your neighbours garden!!:dunno::heehee:

I would like to grow a lot of my own stuff if possible. The wife loves the stuff I grow. I do a killer strawberry and some mean onions but i need it to be 100% organic

I have a 1/2 acre of widerness that is mostly shale. But I'm working on it

Hello David and welcome to the forums
I think that you will have to buy some top soil or do raised beds.

I have started down that road. I have one raised bed just now and working on others as we speak. Thank you for your reply.

Is a wee chair anything like a commode?

Welcome to GC David. I'm a bit further up the road than your good self and trying to garden on rock bed, I doubt that shale is any easier though. Good luck! :)

Shale is terrible, almost oily. I'm lucky though as I have 3 big trees in my garden that generate a mountain of leaves every year. So, I have bought an electric tiller and every year I shred the lot and bury it in the shale. Mix that with what little soil I have and I have something that resembles a grow medium. I can't imagine what trying to garden on bed rock must be like
                              Thank you for the welcome
