I've been looking at the information on 'Covid Dashboard' for areas/wards mentioned in the media for recent additions of whole Local Authority areas to Tier 3, Official UK Coronavirus Dashboard to get an idea of how their infection rates compared to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester when they were put in Tier 3.

One ward I tried checking kept throwing up loads of 'postcode does not exist' errors when I had been copying and pasting them from online searches for shops, schools, pubs, etc. within that ward. As the part of that ward I was searching is a major new housing site, not all its new postcodes appear to be in the government's database.

The 7 day % increase for infections in that ward yesterday was 55%, and today it's 70% which is a tremendous change to a 7 day period to occur in just one day. That's the equivalent of 70 - 55 = 15% x 7 = 105% in just one day required to increase the 7 day percentage by that amount.

That may explain why that ward's infections are 450/100,000 and another neaby problem ward's are 600/100,000. As those are 5 day old 7 day averages, their current rates are probably over 1,000/100,000, much worse than in Liverpool and Manchester when they went into Tier 3.

Combine that with the fact that their rate of infection has tripled over 7 days, with current Xmas shopping and forthcoming family gatherings over 5 days, visiting them all over the country, might mean things are going to get really bad in the New Year.

Although I don't do Christmas shopping I shall still need to go shopping for food. Fortunately one of the supermarkets in one of the nearby towns is opening 24 hours a day (except Sundays) so I may see some of you at 3 a.m. when I go shopping. :heehee:

Not really concerned about meeting many people at that time. :rolleyespink:

New Year has been "cancelled" here ...

"The Prime Minister announced tonight that New Year's Eve (December 31) will have a curfew at 11 pm across the country. On the other hand, on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of January, there will be a ban on circulation on the public road from 1 pm, with the ban on circulation between municipalities being maintained between 00:00 on December 31 and 05:00 on 4 December January, except for health, urgent or other reasons specifically provided for.

"Comparing with New Year, there’s no “cultural tradition” of doing this; it’s usually a celebration with friends and some family if possible, BUT out at a party, either a restaurant or at an event. So it has a lesser impact on the feeling/emotional relations that people have with the date compared to Christmas. In other words Christmas is much more important.

"When we compare Christmas and New Year, some on social media have commented that both should be treated the same as far as the imposition of measures are concerned. However, we need to remember that we are in Portugal and for the Portuguese there are two major festivities where the family traditionally get together – Easter and Christmas.

"The main Christmas celebration in Portugal is the night of 24th and it’s at home, not in restaurants. Usually what families do when they have to, is divide themselves between more than one family house for the celebrations. Often this means having the 24th dinner/night at one family relations house and on the 25th lunch/afternoon in the other family relations house. Usually this happens when the husband’s family are living in one concelho and the wife’s family in another concelho far away, or the other way round.

"That’s why freedom of movements on those nights are so important."

For Christmas, restaurants must close at 1.00am on the 25th following the Christmas Eve celebrations and at 3.30pm on the 25th following Christmas Day celebrations. Groups of no more than 10. On normal circumstances groups of no more than six.

        "Concelho" means County/Municipality.

I reckon Boris (King of the U-Turn) is going to change his tune next week with regard to the relaxation of the rules for Christmas, either that or he is going to impose an even harsher lockdown from 28th at a guess. Not entirely convinced it is going to help as lockdowns etc so far haven't, nor do I think he wants to - he is being pushed into a corner by the likes of Sky, BBC and Captain Hindsight.

Pre Tier 3/Lockdown 2, Manchester and Liverpool had infection rates of over 700/100,000/day (7 day average), and when I checked yesterday they'd both gone down to some like 85/100,000/day. As their schools weren't closed, only pubs, etc., that appears to eliminate schools as their major source of infections.

OK - Wales? Their 'firebreak' appears to have gone so swimmingly well that they were barely out for a couple of weeks and then they are back in again.

For any virus to spread it has to be passed from host to host, therefore surely one of the simplest ways to all but halt its spread is to halt ALL movement for a few weeks - - literally everything except emergency services. Plan it in, and help people to have enough supplies for the intended period, then close. That would mean that only the absolute bare minimum of people would be out and about, anyone with it would incubate it and get rid of it at home.

These so called 'lockdowns' are nothing like a lockdown - - during the last national one that ended on 2nd December the roads around my way were as busy as they were before and after it. Life basically carried on as normal with the exception of wearing masks from what I could see.

Many people ignore whatever the regulations/rules/advice requires them to do, and the police refuse to enforce them [1].

The only thing that might work is the army on the streets wielding big sticks and beating anybody getting out of order.

[1] Apart from stupid activities, like charging garden centre owners for selling cut flowers, setting up roadblocks to catch people buying Easter eggs, monitoring consumption of scotch eggs in pubs, etc.

Most people ignore the regulations because they are muddled, confused and illogical - your example of a Scotch Egg in a pub is a good one; what difference does it make in terms of the virus if you have a bottle of wine with a meal in a restaurant or a cup of coffee?

How is it that I can meet family in a local park which is absolutely heaving with goodness knows how many folk, yet I cannot have that same couple of family members in my own empty back garden? Why is it OK for someone to collect takeaway food, bring it in a minging old banger of an Uber taxi to someone's door yet it is not OK for folks to visit a restaurant and sit in, or even sit in a pub garden? Two friends of my mum got £60 PCN's issued by ANPR camera - their crime? To go to their local Asda store for shopping. They live in East Lothian Council area (tier 2 at the time) and the Asda store is just inside Edinburgh City Council (tier 3 at the time) and the fine was for going between tiers.

It is all that sort of nonsense that makes folk more or less stick two fingers up and carry on as normal.

Yes, there is a lack of personal responsibility involved, but when the messages being given are as clear as mud and even vary between areas and regions, what chance do we stand?

There are idiots ignoring common sense, but to be blunt common sense has been in short supply in this country for years. The point is that the advice is anything but common sense, and that in itself is a driver for folks to say 'sod it' and ignore things.

Boris and crew are far too busy pandering to far too many whims and whinges and the net result is that it is a confused mess where folks are so utterly sick and tired of the changing goalposts they have given up.

A Times journalist has just reported (leak?) that it will be Tier 4, stay at home by law for London and the South East. Speculation of course, but no smoke without fire and all that....
