It's a small world! I was born in Hampton but moved to Yorkshire when I was 2 months old. So I never knew it well except for visits to my grandparents occasionally. My granddad had an allotment on Kempton Park and prior to me arriving Mum and Dad had a Prefab there. My elder siblings went to Hampton infant school as did my Dad.

There's only one good chippy now in Ramsgate, that's Peters Fish Bar near the Harbour, the Haddock is cooked to perfection, the staff are always lovely.

My Dad was actually born in Warfield Rd and they lived there at the time of a severe bomb hit during WW2.
We use to go up to Hampton a lot staying with my Grandparents ,my Dad's brother still lives there. Love H C Palace!! There was a large water ( treatment?) plant behind their house...shocked to see its a housing estate now! My Dad went to Hampton Grammar School.

My Grandad worked as a stoker on the steam engine inside those water works from 1920 till he retired in the 1950s. They lived in Wembley Road, not that far from your family.

My Granny was a "Between maid" at the palace, she walked to work through Bushey Park where she first met my Granddad. He was convalescing at the King George V Hospital Bushey Park – then known as “The King's Canadian Red Cross Convalescent Hospital”. He had been gassed on the Somme in WW1 and was sent to many hospitals in the UK over two years. He never talked about his life, it was only a few years ago when the Canadians released his service history that we discovered the terrible experiences he had. We don't know how lucky we are even with this awful virus, it's nothing compared to what that generation went through.

Puddings. I remember, bread and butter pudding, flaked rice, semolina, that one that was like frog spawn, suet pudding and custard, rhubarb and custard etc.

John. My dad was gassed in WW1. He very seldom mentioned anything about either world war. Apart from saying. Those who had a lot to talk about, usually had no experience of what went on.

We used to get steralised milk in bottles.

                  I like all fish.

Blimey! My brother in law lives right next to the station, and I am not all that far away on the other side of Sunbury Cross (@JWK knows where I am) - small world indeed.

My grandfather would never talk about the war when I was a child - indeed, if the conversation ever went that way, my grandmother or aunt would deflect it so he didn't have hear anything about it.

I remember my old GP from the 60's once saying. Young Mick. You will never be as strong as your dad. He of course knew Dad's medical history. It really is amazing just what punishment the human body can stand upto. I doubt if any serviceman is proud of what part he/she may have played in war and such conflicts.

Strange how life spans out. Dad was amongst the first to go over the top in WW1. He was in the 1st. Batt. Irish Guards. He like so many others, was shot and wounded, gassed and blinded. WW2 he was a Desert Rat, in North Africa. He ended up getting lung fulls of sand, and in his final days of life, his lungs told their own sad story. He was a professional soldier. Not one pattened on Hitlers murder mobs. Field Marshall Rommel was respected by both sides.

Strange. Just prior to me joining the police. I held the job of staff driver for a unit known as CRE. London. This was a civilian version of the Royal Engineers. The civvy guvenor was a man called, Mr Rosen.. For what it might matter. Mr Rosen was a Jew. His now driver was, Bill Nesersky. He being the uncle of a pal of mine who for whatever reason was now caring for my friend. Bill turns out to be. Rommells wartime driver. Bill was captured and ended up in the USA, where war prisoners were treated good. Now during the present day, as it then was. Bill still maintaned that high standard of discipline. Back to my dad. He had the greatest resprct for Wavell but very little for Monty. In his words. Monty was full of Bulls***. All the accounts of Monty being out there in the desert were total lies.

Just a few tit bits of the past.

The frog spawn was Tapioca, my Nan (fathers side), was from up north, north Yorks and County Durham, she was a great cook, meat and potato pie, pease pudding, but she used to make loverly stramed puddings, syrup or tracle, Spotted dick, Jam roly poly, and custard that was nice and thick, bang goes the diet.

My Dad told us of the time that he and some friends were sitting out with their dogs is Bushy Park. They began walking away to return home and heard a bomb falling they were able to take cover but there are still signs today of the indentation left by the bomb.........in the very same spot my Dad and his friends/dogs had been sitting!!:yikes:

One of our local chippies - we have lots at the seaside, this one is the best in the whole wide world - is shut now until the end of Jabuary!! :-( Of course they need a holiday (he also owns a well known Christmas tree farm) and the reasoning is that sales are down in January because so many people are on new years resolution diets. By February they've given up.....
