My son's has a halogen lamp and a small fan to circulate the heat. He uses it all the time rather than their normal oven. Must admit I can't see why it is any better than our fan oven. Mrs JWK won't get one as they look so big and bulky on the work surface , she likes a minimalist look.

So, could I just bung my chips in the microwave oven set to convection and it would do exactly the same thing????

Well, JJ, I did originally contemplate a Deep Fat Fryer but didn't like the idea of using a lot of oil, the smell from the cooking, etc. So, when I did a bit of research, I found there was the absolute minimum of oil needed when using a Air Fryer, they're also very quiet, and the tip to use about a quarter of an inch of water in the bottom of the basket stops any cooking smells or smoke. But, to be honest, before I used that tip I had no problem with either when first using the Air Fryer. But, the Air Fryer can be used to bake, dehydrate, roast, etc so it's just so useful:love30:

We have two of them, one at home and one we keep in our ‘tourer’. The one in the tourer gets used frequently while we are away, makes really nice jacket spuds, but anything else can be a bit of a faff as it’s not so easy to manoeuvre stuff around. Very economical I imagine as you’re only heating a relatively small space.

My step daughter uses an air-fryer, and swears by them. Just worried it may end up on top of the kitchen cupboards with the sandwich toaster, bread-maker, George foreman grill............

Not 100% sure about an airfryer, but Halogen oven is similar to a fan oven, but other than using an element or microwaves/element combo, the sole heat source is a powerful halogen bulb with a fan, the heat from the bulb is far quicker than an element, an example, my Halogen from cold to 200C takes 3 mins, so no preheating is needed, because the heat source is fan aided it also reduces the cooking by 10 to 20%, so for a person or a couple living alone, they are more efficient and enviromentally friendly, however, using as a kitchen device in a family home, along with other kitchen devices not so. Mine comes with an extension ring to expand the cooking area to 17 litres, so I can cook a joint of meat, and roasters together if I wish, however it can roast par boiled spuds to perfection in approx 35 mins, meaning they cook whilst the meat is resting, and being carved, and the veg is in the steamer, so just heat the shop bought gravy whilst serving (highly recommend Lidls ready made Beef gravy), and easy to clean.

                  Thanks @Cuttings.
Might just get a cheap one to replace the deep fat fryer. I'm not into cooking large joints of meat etc.
So perhaps it might just do that job for me.

We treat ourselves to real chips once a fortnight using Maris Piper Potatoes cooked in an old fashioned chip pan filled with oil. Nothing nicer served with some freshly bought haddock, yum.

They take a little getting used to, but since I have had mine, the oven has become redundant.

                        Just my own opinion...
For chips, I don’t think a halogen oven works as well as an air fryer (they’re not the same thing imo) For chips, we use a Breville ‘Halo’ which has a rotating drum inside so that the chips tumble as they cook, which makes for very even cooking. I tend to regard Halogen ovens as being a scaled-down oven.

The thing I needed to get used to, was temperature control. I find the heat set isn’t in sync with the heat achieved, so usually set it about 20c above the temp I normally cook at. Other than finding it a bit of a faff with certain things, it’s very good. Easy to clean too.

Yes, I guess. But it seems there are air fryers and there are air fryers  I guess a lot depends on how much you want to cook. For chips I would only consider one that has some kind of ‘agitator’ inbuilt to make sure of an even cook, unless you’re happy to give them a stir several times. Of course, if you only want a few, then it won’t be as much of a problem. I don’t think the one @ARMANDII has an agitator, but I’m not familiar with that type, so if he says it’s ok for chips, then it’s ok. The problem (as I see it) with the halogen oven is that you have to take the top off and reach down inside to give things a stir. Hopefully that all makes sense
