Yes, here is the quote from one of our local rags. I don't know why international flights for any reason other than humanitarian aid are still happening. The airports should be shuttered!

" A contagious new strain of the virus that causes COVID-19 has infiltrated regions of Canada, health officials said Sunday, a day after announcing the country’s first cases of the variant had been detected.

Patients had recently returned from the U.K., where the variant was first detected."

It was too late months ago, Lori, as logic says the new variant was probably in most countries by then.:dunno: but had not been identified.

There's a UK Scientific research organisation, Jenny, known as the Covid 19 Genomics UK which has been doing checking random positive samples of Covid 19 every week and they identified the new variant.
They've done at least 150,000 samples so far and identified numbers of new variants but this variant is the only one to stay the course and be successful. So they pass on the data to UK Medical Authorities which helps track which variant is where and which is the most successful at surviving.
I don't think it's boasting to say that the UK has, probably, the best Genomic Identifying Organisations in the world.:dunno:

I think that sums it all up, if we hadn't detected it nobody would have blamed us.
It could have come from somewhere else where it hadn't been detected.

But it is strange that I'm not supposed to go out in the street without a good reason, but people are still getting on planes and wandering off all round the world.

And then they wonder why people ignore the regulations:rolleyespink:

Oh, I totally agree that it's source is not the UK - it had to get there somehow and there are plane loads to blame.

We still have several flights of people from China coming in every day and I do not believe for one minute that their travel is essential. And it has been confirmed that there has been at least one person on each flight carrying the virus as no real testing is done before boarding flights to come here.

Conspiracy theorists would probably say that since we've got a handle on the current strain as far as a light at the end of the tunnel with a vaccine, a new strain had to be exported to the world. And it wouldn't take much for most people who only read the twitter or facebook to believe that. I just wish those who are not keeping clean and distant would believe that the very air outside is laden with the stuff! That would get people to do the right thing.

It might have mutated in the UK, I dont know, all I know is that the first country to declare they have found a new strain is going to get blacklisted.
Sometimes its best to stop looking IMO, or at least dont declare it to all the world like some massive achievement,.......BORIS.

Well, there's hundreds of thousands of people flying in and out of countries but there's also thousands of people driving in and out too.:wallbanging: How many Lorry Drivers are there classed as "essential" that come and go?, Ships crew that come and go?, and all the other "essential" people coming and going. What is wrong is allowing people to go on Holiday, like the 200 Brit's that have just abandoned their holidays in Switzerland because they were told to quarantine because of the new variant. They shouldn't even be allowed back in the UK until they've undergone proper tests and a quarantine.:dunno:

That, pete, sounds more like something Trump has, and is saying. Trying to ignore the problem is a form of running away and denying there is a problem, which ends up with more infections and deaths with no one knowing why. The only way to defeat this Virus is to be brutally up front about it because this is a brutal virus.

Being brutally upfront just gets you grief.

I assume all third world countries are checking for mutations and declaring them all to the world.

Unless everyone does it, its counter productive to those that ar

I'm not by any means saying we shouldn't be keeping an eye on it, but saying things l,ike we have a new strain that is spreading like wildfire, when the rest of the world isn't doesn't put us in a particully good light.

I'm kind of hoping when Biden takes over that you will stop referring to Trump all the time.;)

The World has already got that, pete.
If you remember we've had many posts in this thread deliberating downplaying the Virus, or telling us that this should have been done or that should have been done. This is not just a UK thing, it's a Global problem, so holding back vital new information about the Covid 19 virus is sticking our heads in the sand, delaying the final, hopeful, defeat of the virus, causing more deaths and infections, for what?, criticism and blame for being the first country to identify and alert the rest of the World?? We've done enough criticising of everyone else but ourselves just as the rest of the country has done.:dunno::cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

As usual, you have only read the parts of my post that you wanted to, and ignored the rest.

Your last line more or less says that this whole thread should not have been started, as discussion about the subject is all criticism, unless you follow the official line.

I thought the whole idea of this was for others to give their opinions, but it appear that if their opinion is different from yours, or mainstream, then it is criticism which in some ways is not wanted.

I bet that we gardeners would not suffer as severe symptoms as the non gardener if we contracted covid. After all, we breath in manure odour year round. Outdoors in summer and indoors (forum.. ) year round so we must have developed the most robust lungs of anyone! :heehee:
