Gone from about to post about Chip fryers and saw Minnie Aumonier...started me off on one of my favorite past-times Ancestry for husbands family the Aumonier's. Interesting and tragic and I was hooked...
Marie Anne Aumonier B.1785-D.1860 was Husband's third Great Grandmother from around where we live now in France..did not know at the time of landing here...but many thousands of french protestants were living a hell of a life in the 17 and 18th Centuries, for one main cause was Louis 14th a Catholic with a mission who spread hate and violence towards the Protestants, the Catholics which were in the majority in France tortured and murdered and a lot more occurred that was horrific..the Protestants were under huge threats , many took the risk and fled with their families to England and other Protestant countries. Canterbury and London were popular places to move to. French churches were converted from other buildings or new ones were built. London had loads of these French churches in the period of the 18th century. the french protestants where called Huguenots and were strict in their religion.
The Aumoniers were and are a very talented family. Famous top class sculptures, children author and other writers, goldsmiths, diamond jeweller landscape painter and designer, master paper stainer and more.To be continued...

Many stories but one alarming fact was no Protestant during a period of time was allowed in any Church for baptism, marriage and funerals. They created a name for these special services called The Dessert...a place anywhere in the woods in the wilderness and with so much land a place could be found. So baptism Marriages and Funerals still occurred but under stressful fearful and dangerous circumstances. When life was more than tough and closed ones died. they where actually buried in their own gardens.
Another shock was the way they would be torchered and then left for death to consume them.
They..being the Catholics would bury the Protestants up to there heads and just leave them to die. The wives and children would be imprisoned at the very least. There homes burnt to the ground, no wonder many were forced to leave France.
Quite often they would change their names for some protection but honestly I did find it amusing...Dover Ipswich Hounslow Margate..these I have just made up because I do not have the record in front of me but basically they used UK location names and others well know phrases as their new names, now my curiosity is to do a little search....to be continued

Centre Lathe Turner and Tool Maker he was a very precise person so was able to make fine details stuff...
Been for a little walk about with the 'family' and it is very exceptable weather right now..now for a cuppa and contemplate our day..Might take a drive over to Lidls...for a few stocks.

Bizarrely we found a dozen or more of those buried here. Now have them lining a border.

@ARMANDII if you had written the word "watchmakers" instead of "clockmakers" I would have suggested that we could be related...

Yes, that's the place, Dianne. Some of my ancestors also came from the surrounding Villages including Eyam, also known as the Plague Village during the Black Death period. Eyam was quarantined because of infections within the Village and they had to leave coins in dishes of Vinegar when buying food from the outside. Blue John stone was the pride of Derbyshire

Yes, a lot of my ancestors worked for centuries for the Chatsworth House Estate as Estate Agents, Game Keepers, Farmers, House Staff while also living at the Estate Village of Edensor. There's also a number of ancestors resting in the Churchyard of the Edensor Church, and one of my ancestors lived at a House named the Russian Cottage which was a present to the Duke of Devonshire by Tzar Nicholas of Russia.

My brother managed to talk to the Duke of Devonshire some years ago and our Family now has free tickets to the House and Gardens:love30::dunno::heehee:

:dunno::heehee: No, Sandy, they made clocks of all sizes including Tower Clocks for Churches, of which there is an example of one in the Church Tower of Chapel-en-le-Frith.

Somewhat prior to the dates you quote in the opening post, my father's side of the family suffered from and escaped from the Spanish Inquisition. My mother's side had similar discrimination centuries later.

It wouldn't surprise me if many of our members had a family history of persecution for one reason or another. Researching it can be interesting.

Depending on how far you are able to go back (not easy to go back a long way) we may have Celts, Romans, Iceni, Jutes, Angles, Saxons, Vikings, Normans etc. It would be interesting if any members had family folklore going back a long way. :blue thumb:

Well I had to change from a Mixed Senior School at 15 years old that was a walk from my house to a Girl's School that was a fair walk and 2 Bus rides away and recently found a picture of me that really early 60's style but I look embarrassingly tartish and hair back combed to a witches look. How my mother could let that happen...:hate-shocked:We had no physical punishment but us girls often had to wash the make-up off, they didn't seem to be concerned about the hair then.

Not exactly folklore, but I do have one ancestor that got married in Fountains Abbey not to many years after it was built. Judging by its state now, it must have been a good wedding party!:loll:

I would think you would need to join up to some of the Ancestry websites and quite an expense to get deeper than I have managed so far for free.Been back to 1400's so far mainly 1600's with good info...far from any on your list though
.Some of the online Libraries have good resources, takes patience though searching through all that's available
