I have just been watching the Big Freeze, on You Tube.
It bought back many memories. Just as a reminder, it was the winter of 1962/3. Are there any forum members who remeber it. Please share your memories.

If the same media had been about it would have been portrayed as Global Freezing,
another ice age, Wooly Mammoths will patrol the land etc, etc.

I was born in '55 so remember all the kids in the village excavating tunnels through the drifts
with an igloo type chamber in middle where we sat and ate whatever we had brought from home that day. Mmmm, jam sandwich. Fortunately they never collapsed hence we are here today, to see parents wrapping their kids in cotton wool. Not even a game of conkers in the school playground nowadays.

I was born in 1957 so just remember some of it, I remember asking my dad when the snow melts will it be spring? he said yes but when it did i expected that a lot of flowers would grow up but their wasn't because nobody planted any.

I remember it well :blue thumb:. I thought I was going to miss it as I sailed off on December 10th just as the promised heavy snow was starting down in Southampton. Came back in late February just as the first thaw started and enjoyed messing around in it as I had been in the tropics all the time. Sailed again two weeks later and the snow started again. It was still on the ground when I returned in May!

My sister was due to emigrate on December 31st but they closed all the ports and airports.

Although it was a big freeze the very heavy snow was not all that unusual. Although we now live in tropical Essex/Hertfordshire it was not unusual for us to be cut off by snow for some days each winter. I had snow chains for the car so that I could get to work as I live seven miles from the town where I had my business.

All my staff lived in the town and even if there were no busses running they were expected to get to work. Appropriate clothing and a bit of get up and go was all that was needed. A lot of our customers made it and when it was not too busy the staff built snowmen in the square outside and had snowball fights. :dbgrtmb:

I spotted that on utube and will probably watch it one evening.

I was about 8yŕs old at the time.
Remember trudging to school in it, snowball fights all the way there.
Then making massive slides in the playground, solid packed ice.

The army came round with ploughs clearing the local roads, but then you couldn't cross the road afterwards because the snow was mounded so high at the sides.

Good morning @Mike Allen It started on Boxing day and I think it lasted for 12 weeks, yes I remember walking across the river Medway at Chatham(just off Sun Pier) when it completely froze over(usually we had to skull out to the ship) to get to work unloading wood pulp on a ship named "Dixie" we had to use the ships derricks to unload with steam winches

It was my last year of school before going to America. I only lived about four blocks from the school so had to walk in knee deep snow ... I was only 4'8" so maybe it seemed knee deep!

I moved to Alabama end of July 1963 via the SS United States, started college in September and it was nearly 100F!!! :yikes: I thought I would die!

Yes, I remember it well ... both sides of the Ocean.

I can remember the big freeze of 62/63. I would have just turned 12, so would have been in the first year at grammar school. Short pants, little peaked bullseye cap and a satchel! I can remember the side roads and pavements with hard packed frozen snow on them 3" thick for weeks and weeks. The ponds and canal had thick ice, so you could walk and slide on them - great fun. No central heating or fitted carpets in them days, so ice on the inside of windows and absolutely freezing floors. Getting out of bed was a real challenge!

Sorry for going off topic slightly

@Victoria I remember the SS United States well as I had a couple of tours around it when it was docked near us. One time I was supposed to meet a friend that worked on board I wasn't allowed on because they were loading the Mona Lisa to take it for an exhibition. The ship held the Blue Riband trophy (really ugly trophy) for fastest transatlantic crossing.

                      @shiney

It was a lovely ship. As Anne and I were under 18 (me 15 Anne 16) we had Chapperones, a lovely lady and an Indian gentleman. I have some pictures and a Menu signed by everyone.

I can't remember the name of the ship we emigrated to Canada on in 1950 ... you probably know it too! I still have my Immigrant Card from Canada but my US Green Card was taken from me by the Authorities on my last trip there in 1996.

Our village was cut off for a couple of weeks. The snow drifts towered over me and with my siblings we burrowed in to make igloos. Eventually my Dad and a few other farmers cleared the snow with their tractors so we could go back to school and get food.

Sheep on our farm had to be dug out by hand, my Dad took this photo. This wasn't an uncommon event in Yorkshire but definitely worse in 1963:

I was born in the summer of 61 but apparently my Mum stood me in the back garden and she couldn't see me anymore coz the snow was deeper than I was tall. Id like to say I have a stirring in the depth of memory of it but that maybe because it was talked about for years after. I do however remember ice on the inside of windows for several years of my childhood. I know we didn't have central heating back then but I think global warming cant be denied because I dont think that would happen regularly if at all these days even without turning the heater on. My memory can definitely recall the smell of a paraffin heater on the landing which did nothing at all.

I remember at that time I spent most of it in front of the mirror either brush-combing my hair or re-doing my hair..I have an embarrassing photo that I can look at,;) cringing though...14/15 years old being a 1948 baby...
I do remember a terrible storm that wrecked roofs and felled trees..sevenoaks no seven oaks left standing after that storm....
hope that does not sound off topic.hair and storms as opposed to The Freeze:runforhills:
I have thoughly enjoyed your stories and feel left out in the cold...."snow dig"

I managed to get a Double Decker Bus stuck in deep snow in the 70's. It was great fun getting it free.
