It needs a bit of TLC! Timbers more rotten than previously thought and glass falling out all over

I don't think this is a good enough excuses Loofah, its only got a few ventilation holes which you'll need later , already got shading on the glass for the coming summer year :blue thumb: You can always wear a hard hat or just let the tomatoes grow through the ventilation holes and pick from outside .

A belting one, it even has the old heating pipes although the fire / boiler has long since rusted to scrap. Very much looking forward to bringing it back to life

I'm trying 4 new for me varieties this year
                  Pera Naranja
                  Sergant Pepper
                  Irish Stripy
                  Altaya's Gold(russian)
                  and repeating
Black Cherry, Sungold F1 and Brandwine Yellow.
And wanna cucumbers again - had 2 summers in a row when those failed to peronosporosis.
Greenhouse is 6 X 8 only. Will take 2 glass panes out this summer for better ventilation.

That's what I do too, on opposite sides to get a good airflow.

                      Hi all,

Just reorganizing our greenhouse which has a concrete floor as its just thick clay beneath.

Is there any "ideal" soil depth for growing greenhouse toms ?

Can always remember a Gardeners World program some years ago where a guy used say 15" tubs but only half filled them with compost saying they did not need any more, and the plants looked good.
Assume he must have been eatering very regularly ?

The ideal is to keep the level of moisture and feed consistent. Some commercial places accomplish this in just flowing water (nutrient dosed water is pumped around and the plants just grow in that) so no 'ideal' soil level.

Just by looking at tomato grow bags and how thin they are, I wouldn't expect it needs to be a full bucket.

I think if you grow hydroponically you might as well just go and buy some toms from the supermarket, and up to a point the same applies with grow bags.
In a bag, the the plant mainly lives on the chemicals you feed it, the bag is sterile and is only there to hold the roots and keep them moist.

Pots are also the same, unless you use proper soil and organic matter.

Which is why I only grow outdoor toms.

                            Sorry, I know I'm boring.:rolleyespink:

I'm going to give early sowing a shot again, this year. The results have been pathetic previously, due mainly to lousy compost and sciarid fly infestations. I've sown some cherry toms and a few beefsteak varieties to grow in pots in the temporary 'conservatory' by the house wall. The idea is to spread the season, with earlies near the house, then some in the polytunnel before it gets too hot, and more outside in June to take over from them and see me through to November.
I'll let you know how the taste compares between pot-grown and in-the-ground!
