My late Dad went to evening classes to learn French with intentions, Holidays in the South France in the future..He had many great times with being able to converse a little even. I wish I had learnt at a younger age, I get by and reading is easier than speaking where unless you say it perfectly it is not understood generally I find. I speak some Spanish badly also...Both purely as a need rather than a:lolpt: pleasure.

Impossible to read hubs language, although I can write my name!.
It's lovely to see , very pretty in fact but looks like shorthand with all the squiggles and dots. They also write/read from right to left.....and read books/ magazines backwards!!!;):heehee:

I was meaning in General, people around us have always been very good with taking in our bad ways with their language and likewise especially the younger ones often have some good knowledge of our Native Language. Sometimes it becomes sign language but always funny.
Sorry about the black and white view coming over...:phew:Our New Bank is very international that way, so all gets sorted, just takes forever even though I impressed her with the amount of OTT paperwork I took with me for the new account opening recently.:spinning:

I have the Duolingo app and dabble between a couple of languages on there, have done for a few years now. Thats why I also like foreign programmes and films, although I have subtitles on I also like to here the different languages being spoken.:)

I speak 5 languages somewhat passably, it's an occupational hazard if you are a Finn I guess. You either learn languages or become a Formula1 driver

Language snobbism is interesting. I spent some time in Paris in the 90s and was totally snubbed when trying to speak English. Ordering a black coffee in English in a McDonalds resulted in the cashiers blatantly ignoring me and taking orders behind my shoulders. Policemen wouldn't help me to find my destination.

"Paris attitude" was something I had heard of, so I changed the tactics and blatantly spoke in Finnish. The change was incredible, in the same McDonalds the cashier really took her time to understand what I wanted, taught me how to say it in French and was super friendly. :) As long as I wasn't a stupid Amer... you know... I was an interesting foreign person.

In some countries, any attempt to speak the language is warmly taken as a compliment. I had no problems at all in Southern Europe, everyone was very keen to try to understand my message. Buying the stiffening stuff you use when sowing collared garments was easily done with gestures

Not quite so in the ex- Soviet block country where the shop keeper refused to understand that I needed an alarm clock (descriptive hand movements towards the said article on the shelf and mimicking be-bep-be-bep-MORNING" didn't help) because I didn't know that an alarm clock has a specific word (a bit like bell/clock/watch difference in English). I couldn't get my coat from the cloakroom because I used the feminine declination instead of the masculine one that is correct for coats. Grrr.

Here in the UK people take my atrocities with their language very kindly and rarely correct me. Thanks!

I must say I do take an advantage of this kindness just to enjoy some black humour moments, such as describing my weekend activities being "banging and screwing" with Mr Selleri. Intending to describe the activities after a delivery from IKEA. Sorry! :heehee:
