I would never have thought that was a preformed pond. Amazing :). I wish my preformed pond looked that good :heehee:

I was looking at preformed ponds but for us its not the cost its how far i can dig down i did look at pdf again and he looks like he is using sand to level? ,if its going to be a preformed pond how do you know which one to get eg how many shelfs slopes etc
do you get stones rocks gravel etc before you start digging if so how do you know how much to get or is it just down to personal choice

Gizmo, you buy one that fits onto your situation, as to depth, that will also be determined by the depth of the preformed pond.
The sand is to back it all up after its in the hole, with some placed in the hole first to take the base, it must be in there level or it will look odd around the top edges as they need to be, IMO slightly below ground level.

But I would still go for a liner, that way you dig down as far as you can and you can make it any size or shape you want.
Bearing in mind the top, again, needs to be level.

I would, honestly, forget the preformed pond and go for the pond liner alternative.:dunno: Can you get someone to give you a hand with the digging??

I'm not sure how much extra soil you have, Gizmo, but probably the soil you will be digging up, when creating the pond, will be of poor quality so you could mix the poor soil with the good extra soil you have to put a raised bed around the pond that will enable you to put in plants more easily, while also hiding any mistakes you might make when getting the pond level.
Do you have any borders that you can add the extra soil to??

If you have somewhere where you can use the artificial grass then I would use it or, if not, can you store it somewhere for later use?

The only good place, for me, for artificial grass is...........

You keep getting ahead of your self.

One step at a time, take the fake grass up and work out shape etc. for the pond.

@Gizmo -yes, like pete, now a bit confused where the pond is going, thought it was to be in the same place as the old one at the side of the shed ?
Even so your desired pond size of 7 x 5 ft would seem to leave little room for edges all around ??

Not wishing to put you off, and not ware of your physical abilities if you are doing it all on our own, but for the size of pond you stated earlier in this post, you are talking about digging and removing about 3 cubic meters of soil which is roughly 4 tonnes in weight, a lot of work than needs to be spread out over a good few days to avoid injury.
Also a bit of a problem if you have to take things though the house to get to a skip at the front, as some houses have to.

the new pond will be in the same place beside shed but hoping for a little bit bigger pond if we got 5 foot left to right x 7 foot top to bottom we should have room around pond and shed how much is unsure at the moment
my disability is osteo arthritis in spine and hips , Bronchiectasis lunge disorder ,these are the main ones
the skip is coming tomorrow now as they could not get driver for this afternoon the skip will be around 70 feet from our back garden with my health conditions i can only work for about 90 minutes 2 hr but can still be in pain with spine so i try and push my self in order to complete the task

Well with getting older we find that we have to temper ideas with practicalities, which is what we suspect your original above ground pond was, but unfortanately it had those problems.

Have to say in the situation you describe we would look for an easier solution, perhaps not to your first thoughts, but worth a look ...?

this first pond looks good to us and once the plants start growing the pond edge should be soon hidden and as the woodwork is isolated from the pond proper it should not be a problem, just like any normal raised bed.

the other is a very different design, think is one you love or hate, but both ponds are so much easier to build and maintain.
