WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2021

for around an hour this morning. Outside at 8 am. Still too wet to do much and quite windy. Pulled weeds out of baths. Went to pond area and had a general clear up of one of the raised flower beds, weeding, cutting back, etc. disappeared to be replaced by and stronger wind and drop in temperature. Scooted back indoors.

 

Doing nothing today in the garden it's frosty and very very cold.

 

Nothing; far too wet underfoot and raining as well.

 

Fresh frosty but sunny morning!

Got some bits to do outside -relaying some electrical cable. Don't want to over burden the supply that also supplies the koi pond pump-would be devastating if that went pop!

Also got the RSPB birdwatch to do at some point today. I'll be interested to see how many birds I record compared to last year now I've got 24 new trees!

 

We had a light dusting of snow overnight and then lovely sunshine. A perfect morning for the first proper gardening for a while.

Tidied up spent stems of perennials, I always leave them in as I dislike bare patches of nothing and possibly birds will find something to eat in them too. It was amazing to see the happy new growth already poking up. Winter pansies are starting to flower and bulbs are coming through as well.

In the vain attempt to keep the floors clean (it was hoovering and mopping day yesterday) I filled the pots where the next batch of seeds will go tonight, in the garage. Then I carried them to the planting area aka dining table without taking my muddy clogs off.

A sudden burst of that spring feeling prompted me to start clearing out the garage. I found the lawn mower (knew I had one!), desk chair and various rather nice pots I didn't know I have.

Took down the Christmas lights and straightened the rose obelisk. Admired everything green, and even smiled at the weeds already appearing here and there. Hummed "Bella Ciao" and toiled away.

I managed to give my spare seeds away via Nextdoor freebies, surprisingly there was much more interest than I thought. One local charity run their own allotment and many people just like to try something new. Nice to know the seeds I had in my box, some leftovers, some from those pesky gardening magazines that push something on you, some grabbed in the sales, will have some use.

I'll let the lunch settle a bit and the it's back to the back garden for some more tidying up.

Stoppit, Selleri!! You're not only tempting Fate, the weather Gods and goodness knows what else, you're doing at them! Pack it in!

 

That's all sorted, my sister is a meteorologist and we have several members of clergy in the family tree so I know the right people regarding any heavenly matters.

 

That's OK then.....Please can you do something about the current Gallic sogginess?

 

That's the trouble posting when your tired..we have a bath and shower and we have found it impossible to pull weeds out of them...

 

Been fed up with being kept in doors by this weather. So decided although it was cold i was actually going to do something.
We live in an ex local authority property which has a 100 ft long rear garden. The bottom portion of the garden is where I grow my veg (usually potatoes, broad beans and runner beans).
I have a raised bed which I use for the broad beans, so I thought I would weed that, there won’t be many as it’s covered. Wrong !

Having done that and while I still had the enthusiasm I decided to dig a trench for my runner beans. I fill the trench with kitchen waste (veg peelings egg shells that sort of thing) that rots down to provide a good start for the beans.


was going to do some more weeding this afternoon but we’ve been having snow showers and the wind is bitter. So save that for another time.

 

@Ashleyc it's so satisfying seeing the results of a good weeding isnt it. It makes you feel like you've really achieved something.

Today, we took out the pipes for the old automatic watering system. Then around the house and up to garage we laid some new cable. I was digging out the shingle next to the house-putting the cable in and covering it up. Ended up giving the courtyard area a good tidy up because of that. Putting the cable down was hard work and when you are finished you don't even see it-feels a bit non-productive!!

Sorted the plants out round the side of the house and noticed my pots of tulips were all sprouting. My pots of honey lillies and "graceful alliums" were all sprouting like mad too.

Eventually came inside and for some reason I decided to start restoring my great grandads tool kit and his secateurs. They must be about 100 years old now and I sharpened them up etc and snipped some old dead heads off a rose-they worked beautifully!

 

@Snorky85 yes you do get a sense of achieving something. Problem is I’ll now have to keep on top of it..

I’m sure you will get the benefits of all your hard work even if you can’t see it.

Like the secateurs, amazing still work after all this time. Old tools just seem to be built to last.

 

I have felt quite fed up as far as gardening goes and never have I seen such boginess in this garden. The only times I recall are after a normal heavy down pour is water laying on the border with the dog mob neighbours purely because their garden is higher than ours...going to rain most of the night and refused to look at tomorrow predictions....There's Armandii,Snorky85 and Ashleyc doing their tasks earlier and getting some payback with their results..little green monster in the growing stages here...
