That's years and years ago when he had to have a break from GW and Toby Buckland took over in 2008.:)

I've always watched GW but it's not the same without Nigel.

I don't watch the bits that they do in other gardens just watch Monty.

I enjoy the whole programme especially seeing Adam Frost's progress on his own garden. I like dogs but they definitely don't make the programme for me.....I can take them or leave them as I watch it for the gardening tips/ advice.

Yes Mike ,Monty had a stroke back in 2008. Thankfully he seems to have recovered well.:dbgrtmb:

He seems like a nice calm bloke - with a bit of a sense of humour (especially being on the recent Alan Partridge series in 2019). In an era of aggression or people trying to be "wacky", he's reassuringly polite and old school in his manner, which sometimes I think we need more of.

What do you expect when he's doing a gardening programme? Have nothing to work with? Then people will be moaning about that.

Well, I think I was trying to point out that most Gardeners cannot afford to plant so lavishly, Logan, so it can be a bit frustrating for some, and affordable pots can be done using plants at prices we're willing to spend on.
Monty, to be fair, is not the only one to do it, as a lot of the other Presenters trying to show Gardeners how to make up a large pot with colour do the same presenting a finished product that would cost several hundred pounds which is way beyond the pocket of ordinary Gardeners while looking pleased with themselves. I think it would be far more clever and interesting if they showed Gardeners how to make good planted pots within ordinary budgets. As I said I like Monty as he gardens with quiet passionate but, at times, loses touch with what other Gardeners can afford.
There is one Presenter who, in my opinion, gardens with the same sort of passion as Monty but is realistic enough to keep projects within ordinary budgets........and that is Adam Frost.

I am reminded of Geoff Hamilton who was very much a man of the people, he would show us how to garden and make things on a tight budget. I have to agree with you @ARMANDII that not many of us have the luxury of a potting shed full of home made composts of varying mixes plus a big heated greenhouse.

I think he was probably the best Garden Presenter that Gardeners World ever had. He just had a way of talking that made you feel you were part of the family, and his habit of showing you how to do things cheaply and his common sense advice and tips got you really inspired to go out into the garden as soon as the program had finished! He understood the ordinary Gardener, what they were interested in, and the limitations of their pockets, yet inspired them to make their gardens so much better.

I used to visit Barnsdale with my Wife after he passed away and loved the number of different style gardens from a small Town Garden to country gardens that he created permanently at Barnsdale for people to see.
I was really pleased when his Family had the Bust made and set up in the Garden.

Can we also have a shout out for Carol Klein. She should be given the top presenter job after Monty. Come on let's have a woman for a change...one who is superbly qualified and given the highest honour from the RHS last year. She is brilliant-full of enthusiasm. She has also done a book on propagation of loads of different plants for you to build a garden from scratch. Bloody love her. And she is really friendly and down to earth. Woo woo carol! :hapfeet:
