Hi I wonder if anyone can help. We have this small tree or possibly Kate shrub and we’re really struggling to figure out what it is. Here are some pictures. It’s ever green flowers in spring but we can’t remember when as we’ve only been in our house a short while. The leaves are small - around 2cm long.

I’d really appreciate some help as it’s getting large and defining needs some sort of pruning! Thank you!

Hello Bangaio, it looks like an overgrown Osmanthus burkwoodii. It should respond to severe pruning when the frosts are finished and the flowers are over. It will need some TLC in the way of a balanced feed and careful watering through this summer.

I think its nice to see a shrub that has grown naturally, if you have the space I'd leave it alone.

thank you that seems like it is spot on. Our daughter loves it and calls it the fairy tree but it is starting to grow a bit too wide and low as well as growing into the pit building next door so we’ll get ready for the flowers to drop.

It's also effectively screening whatever is behind it! Perhaps something you'd rather not see?
