Yes the census is compulsory. This is the last one, after this information will be gathered electronically.

A by-product of gardening is the amount of time it gives you to think and to solve the troubles of the world :heehee:

While I was out there I was thinking about the census . One of the things I thought about, without coming to a conclusion, was the different effect that may be the outcome of either not filling in your qualifications if not sure or guessing.

If you guess, what are the odds on you guessing wrongly and skewing the results compared with not guessing and leaving it blank and therefore not having an immediate effect on the other results? :rolleyespink:

How would they go about doing that?

I would think it would be from the mountains of data that is available from the DHSS , NHS etc etc. I would hope that Facebook and its ilk would not be used, info would be patchy for a nation and probably they don't have access to it. We can worry about this in 10 years time :)

Well, they ask similar questions at every census so they should have my answers already :heehee:

I’ve only seen the letter telling you to do the census, as Mum’s carer copied it through to me.

I was rather shocked by it, reading it with my mum in mind. It very clearly states that you have to do it, you do it on-line, there is a fine for not doing it, you have to do it.
Only then does it say that you can ask for a paper copy. No way of requesting a paper copy by post - you have to request by phone. I’m guessing a “press 1 for...” type system, @Jiffy ? The sort of system that elderly people often struggle with.

I’m so glad that the carer intercepted it. My mum would have got into a total panic, and would not have read as far as being able to request a paper copy... Fortunately, my brother says it can be done by a relative, if POA has been invoked.

Having said all that, she would have also got into a state if a paper copy had landed on the door-mat. Dementia is a cruel thing...

              @Sian in Belgium

              Yes, phone 08001412021
Press 1 to order paper copy
It asks you to type in the 10 digit ref number top right hand side of letter using the telphone key pad
if your successful it will inform you that the paper one with come in 5 to 10 working days

It took 2/3 attempts to get through !

only done it today so we will see if it works !!!!:paladin:

As I suspected - you have to be fairly tech-savvy, even to request a paper copy.
I hope that those who follow up un-returned censuses will be sympathetic....

We exist twice. We were just moving to another country when the 2001 European census dropped through the letterbox. It was all postal then so allowed longer margin to fill and return. We did that, and moved away.

Upon arrival we found the same form in our new home country, so again filled it in (different language for variety), without realising that it's the same all- EU census.

But yes this one is clear, you can fill it in now, and should something change on 21st great if you could kindly let them know please.

Census is important for statisticians and crime novel writers alike. I think Agatha Christie used census night in her books a few times. :)

The punishment for not completing the census, is to watch the Harry and Meghan interview for 24 hours on loop. :)

I saw 20 minutes of that fell asleep and woke up at 11.30, freezing cold and went to bed.
