Yes! The Capri was particularly light on the rear end. I was advised to put a couple of concrete slabs on the boot floor.
Few cars came with decent sound systems back then, so i spent many weekends fitting radio cassette units.
Remember how crap cassettes were... Your favourite album would suddenly stop and you listened in a state of dread as the player scrunched all the tape up lol.

 

Yeah remember pulling yards of tape out of the machine.
You would try to turn it off quickly but it still mangled it all up.

 

Never had a steering lock, i wouldn't even lock the car and even left the key in it, never had car nicked, but i would allway park next to a sports car, the sports car would be gone and my car still there

 

Followed a similar route of Hillman Imp and Ford. I had a Sunbeam Stiletto ( Imp fast back) and a Capri Mk4 GT4, a lovely car If you ever watch "Bangers and Cash" on Yesterday, some amazing cars are auctioned on there, lots of classic boy racer Fords.

 

Here's a funny story.
My sister and oh had a triumph spitfire, they parked in the road and always put the crook lock on steering wheel and brake.
She got in it one day and forgot to take it off and drove off.
Then found she couldn't stop and couldn't steer much either, so she crashed into a car parked on the other side of the road.

 

@JR some of my cars had 8 track tape players. I still have a portable player that is the same orange as my 'cuda My mustang has a cd player, tape deck and radio combo. And I have a Herb Alpert cassette... dreadful. Tnat man could not sing. He should have kept his trumpet over his lips

In all seriousness, I spent five hours of my life sorting out old Screws, Nails and bolts I found in a bucket in my shed. Threw away half of them and the others are now sorted in a lidded plastic sorting tray awaiting their use.

Funny story: while going inside for half an hour to drink some tea, my wife yelled "there is a bird stealing your screws" and i had to shoo away two magpies looking for their share.

I'm not much use these days to Mrs Ewing I guess.. although I'm still good with the lawn mower, but she sticks around thankfully. Without her, me and the cat would have a serious decline in luncheons.

 

On the question of tapes, found these brand new and unopened.
Setting up the timer to record something was always a bit hit and miss, especially if the programmes were running late for some reason.
But it was cutting edge technology at the time.

Hands up all those that bought a Beetamax first and then found it was redundant?

 

Recording music on a tape deck was a bit of a chore too. I'll never forget a friend of mine recorded one of her favourite songs from the radio and when she played it back, there was this out of tune singer added to the mix. She didn't realize that she'd left the microphone on as she was singing along whilst it recorded

Stamps.



The very rare things I put in the postbox are usually pre-paid replies, I wrote my latest separately posted letter in the early 2000's. Now the physical letters go into Christmas parcels stamped and stickered in the post office and everything else is done via email.

I recently had to find a way to return a signed contract and it took me a while to realise I can just send it in an envelope. After a bit of a thought I discovered that stamps can be bought with my Tesco groceries order so now I'm a proud owner of a half used book of first class stamps.

Preparing the envelope I was expecting to lick the stamps (remember that slightly sweet, papery and rubbery taste? ), but disappointingly, they were stickers.

In my young years, the golden era of PenPals, everybody forked out a sum to spend on stamps. These were bought in the post office and stored in a special pocket of the letter paper kit you invariably got as Christmas present.

We still exchanged letters with my grandmother in the 90's, regardless that we spoke on the phone weekly and met nearly weekly. It was just so natural to pen out a short letter, stamp it, and drop it in the postbox next morning. Much easier than calling and asking the other person to take notes on the tasks planned or shopping list or dates of important visits.

Birthday cards, postcards from holidays, all gone now. Christmas cards were ousted on sustainability reasons years back, and happily replaced with more in depth annual reports on family doings with photos as email attachments.

I had one of those steering wheel lock thingies that I used on my B reg primrose yellow Mini City E (Beryl the Peril). Oh I loved that car so much-wish Id kept it! I was forever leaving the headlights on and the battery going flat, id forget to take the handbrake off and drive all the way home from college. You didnt need a key to open the door-the lock on the door handle was broken-i could open it with my fingernail! and it had a broken manual choke which I had to hold to start which was a pain, but I LOVED it.
