No more comments on whether to or not, so decided to do the lot the vegies have 2 choices lo

 

Questions question questions sorry. It was a bit wet with a chilly old wind here today, the weather is looking better next week for us and I am thinking about digging this manure in, by either running the cultivator through to loosen the ground then run the rotavator over it, or have father run his little crawler and plough over it ( as he likes to have a play on it now and then) then rotavate.

What would be the best option



Whilst im here asking questions, mother wont be planting out till mid may, I think a late frost got some of her things last year. I have some black plastic sheeting once it dug and rotavated would it be worth covering the plot for 4-5 weeks until she is ready to plant.

 

Cheers shiney, Its not a heavy crawler its one of them little ransomes ones, I will see if there a pic of it later, wieght wise I reckon about double the weight of the rotavator. My thinking is as I have had my digger running about on the soil it might be a bit compacted for the rotavator straight on it, with the wind today its drying out a bit here so looking good for next weeks digging. Shiney, here is fathers crawler he said its a Ransomes mg6

 

We are really struggling to get hold of poultry manure pellets. I placed an order for 600 x 20kg bags 4 weeks ago and its not looking like I will get them for another 2/3 weeks. Never used to have this problem until new legislation was passed allowing animal litter to be burnt for energy.

 

Good point shiney I will see if the rotavator will do it first

 

Rather than put the rotavator on it and risk breaking a blade, I decided to run the cultivator tines through the ground down to a foot deep a few times to loosen it up a bit while the weather was good today. I think the weather is pretty good all week here, once the ground has dried out a bit I shall then get the rotavator on it before covering it up for a time.

While the weather has been kind a couple of days ago I managed to get a few passes on mother veggie plot with the rotavator.



I am glad I ran the cultivator through it first. Yesterday and today I was raking up stones, there was a lot of stones. They came in real handy though building up the ground outside the green house, all it needs now is levelling then it can be compacted with a compactor plate. I will then spread some sharp sand over the top of the compacted stones and compact again finger crossed the blocks could be down next week, weather permitting, also the compactor plate is available for hire.

I will now let the veggie plot settle so mother can start planting when she is ready.
