WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2021

My Solanum betaceum (Tamarillo / Tree Tomato) seeds arrived today so planted a few along with Portulaca Grandiflora Double Mix. Now it is .

 

I don't envy you , it takes forever to mix concrete up by hand .

 

All I’ve done today is finished the water barrel renovation.

Yesterday the leaky barrel was filled with about 6” of hardcore, then sand /top-of-the-garden soil up to about 12” from the top. The giant plant pot was positioned on bricks to make it as level as possible.

Today I put the pots of watermint/lily and yellow flag back in around the pot, along with the mulm and root mass from emptying the barrel. I felt that this was important, as it is probably full of dragonfly larvae....
This was then topped off with leaf mould, as I wanted low-nutrient growing medium for the bog plants around the remaining water. The water from the fishes’ trug was put into the central pot, the pump was moved over, and the fish unceremoniously transferred over. Far too many fish, even though they are tiddlers, so I will be offering them locally again. (The fish in view is the biggest, around 3”)

I hope to plant some ground cover plants in the “bog garden” around the water, and then top off with compost. Just need to work out how to source the plants, and what to get....

 

Been fairly productive today as it’s meant to throw it down tomorrow!

• Got a blueberry Bush which is my treat for the month. But might cave and get another.
• Repotted all my herbs from 9cm pots into bigger pots. Will grow on a little more before planting out.
  
• Reseeded patches of my lawn
• Planted up one GYO bed. Nothing massive. Few viola, lettuces, direct sown peas, a established rosemary and two parsley plants. Weather looks a tad iffy towards next week but have some heavy duty fleece if needed.

I really want to do companion planting for my veg growing to see how truly effective it is but with my brassicas I just cannot let go of my netting

 

Just a few more trays of seeds sown this afternoon.
Sowed another batch of Cosmos ' Brightness Mixed.
Teddy Bear Sunflowers
Italian White Sunflowers
Velvet Queen Sunflowers
Gypsophila.

Prepared another tray of compost to sow the last remaining seeds tomorrow hopefully.

Absolutely nothing.

 

Moving a few more seedlings out into the greenhouse, they're growing strongly now and we still have half of the greenhouse snugly encased in bubble wrap with plenty of rolls of fleece to hand too. This section can be completely closed off from the other half of the greenhouse so it can get nice and warm .
A few more seed trays are just begging me to use them.....so if I must

 

Yesterday weeded the fruit bushes, dug up a spare gooseberry bush for a colleague.
Today in the greenhouse seed sowing, checking dahlias, repotting a tree dahlia, picking freesias for the house.

 

Going with the change of tact now. My garden is a cross between a thai jungle......and steptoes yard so as I progress in years, I'm removing a lot of the climbers and high maintenance shrubs. More small palms and shape able shrubs will give it a less cluttered look(hopefully)
