It'll be one of those years where there's one frost in September, then autumn will go on until Christmas

That's why I now grow most of my tomatoes in polytunnels and have organised much of my outdoor growing into long beds that can have water pipe hoops with poly covers over them, plus fleece if required.

I'm with you on the polytunnel, @Scrungee. I've got carrots, radish, beetroots, parsley; lemongrass and coriander producing, with toms and courgettes flowering, and peppers, aubergines, chillies, sweet potato, ginger and basil planted up. Very little on the veg plot apart from autumn-planted stuff. It's been way too cold and dry!

It can't be that cold if you have the likes of ,"toms and courgettes flowering, and peppers, aubergines, chillies, sweet potato ginger and basil".

Most of that would be dead in an unheated poly tunnel over here.

My veg plot's a bit peculier  It's near the bottom of a SE-facing slope, but not right at the bottom, so rarely gets frosted. The sun is up by 7am, the coldest part of the 'night', and the polytunnel soon warms up. It just takes a bit of juggling with the ends to ensure it doesn't get too hot or too cold. Being 20m x 6m x 2.5m, even with a few unplanned ventilation holes made by the cats, it gives pretty good protection. Summer heat is more of a problem than cold!

I do something similar in our spare bedroom/study, placing shelves across the window with ends one side supported on battens fixed to my homebrew racking and resting on permanent shelves on a return wall. I tell Mrs Scrungee it's temporary and just for a few weeks or so.

This is my 'temporary' lash up auxillary indoor lighting area, shelving units either side of a table. It's a work in progress and will have the lights raised and an additional top shelf added so the table top can be used during the day and plants placed on it when the lights come on overnight during economy 7 hours.

Exactly, @Scrungee . My pasting table is up in a spare bedroom, the small table under the window is on the landing...

I did quite well today at Homebase - they had rather healthy herb plants of a fair size too - so I have sage, rosemary (I moved our existing one to the back of the garden at the weekend and to be honest don't expect it to survive) and oregano; I am not launching them outdoors just yet, so will let them sit in the porch for a week or so yet

@NigelJ - a note of thanks to you for your suggestion to start beans/peas etc off on dampened kitchen roll. I did exactly that in plastic food containers on the living room windowsill (nice and warm) with some fine beans, purple podded peas and some sweetcorn and had really good results. All are now in compost and in the greenhouse. The sweetcorn look better/bigger than the ones I saw in the garden centre a week or so ago.

I am back in the game!

@Fat Controller I'm glad it worked well for you. Like yours mine are in the greenhouse growing well. Hope that they all continue to do well when we put them out.
The past few milder nights have made a big difference to everything and plants are really growing well.
My melons that were looking yellow have greened up noticeably in the last couple of days.

The change is quite remarkable - we were about to give up on some trays of pepper/chillies and today a couple have sprouted.

I confess to cheating with plug plants for my baskets (el cheapo and if they fail, they fail) and have also managed to get some rather lovely veg and herb seedlings from the garden centre.
