Are you growing in greenhouses? Mine are coming along with lots of nice green growth but they aren't even in the final position yet!

That makes me feel less bad then! I'm going to jump the gun a little and get mine put in the ground in 2 weeks time and just keep an eye on the weather report, cloche and fleece if I need to.

Mine are only 8" tall, I aim to plant them in an unheated greenhouse in mid May provided the forecast is good. You will do more harm than good planting outdoors too early, tomatoes will sulk with cold nights, ie stop growing and take a few weeks to recover.

My plants are traveling every day now to the greenhouse andcoming back home in the evening. Planting out (in the GH) not earlier than in mid May. It was 2.8 degr.C only yesterday night in the gh.

Soil temperatures play a big part when planting out early, we have not had any proper warmth, day and night to warm up the soil, I'm not seeing much weed seed germination, maybe its to dry, but maybe its too cold.
I normally have my outdoor toms in the cold frame now and growing away fast, but I've risked three plants and they look a bit purple to be honest.

I cover the cold frame with bubble wrap at night but it really is too cold for toms.

Mine will be going in growbags so I'm hoping that will be slightly warmer soil as the plastic will insulate it a little. Last frost here is end of May but was going to push them through a little earlier and go mid-May. I think the weather will have warmed up a few degrees more by then.

It's worth trying, you have to find out for yourself what your garden is like. You may be much more sheltered than me and in a more urban area the microclimate can be kinder. If you have a south facing wall a lot of tender plants will thrive but not a few yards away in a colder spot.

Keep a few tomato plants back for insurance :blue thumb:

Yes planning for a very sunny spot. Last year I planted them on one side of my front garden and they grew amazingly well. I don't really "believe" our last frost date according to all guidance, I feel like I've never seen it so late as end of May, but there's always a worry!

Well I've never seen a real frost in May, but the way this year is going I wouldn't be surprised.

I find B&Q verve drys out faster, good value though but i always use jacks magic for toms & veg esp in summer if in pots, ive just bought 17 x 60ltr bags of Durstons for £80 inc delivery which i thought was a bargain, looks a bit like verve compost il see how it goes ...i think jacks will always be my favourite but the prices have jumped up at least a £1 per bag here xx:sad:

@joolz68 they would benefit from being moved outdoors during the day, get some natural sunlight.

There was a packet of Black Russian tomato seed that came free with a magazine that I’ve planted anyone grown them before? What’s the taste like?
