A sober lesson around what happens when you end lock down too early. I blame Narendra - everything was going to plan until he said that the virus had been beaten. This was the signal to everyone to go back to some sort of normality.

It now looks like India is running out of vaccine - how can this be when the Serum Institute of India is a world leader.

But that's the way of the world, isn't it? Like Live Aid. The 'stars' who participated in the concert could have sorted the famine between them, but it was Joe public who gave.

It's a known fact that those with the least, tend to be more generous, giving and helpful than those who are most well off. I think it's because we are more socially aware of those who need help the most.

I see Australia has put a ban on their citizen's returning from India. Anyone returning faces a 5 year prison sentence or a £37,000 pound fine or both. Ironic when you think that all Australian passports state the following inside them.

"The Commonwealth of Australia… requests all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer, an Australian citizen, to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford him or her every assistance and protection of which he or she may stand in need."

Australia has near as damn it wiped out covid.
If I was was them I'd stop all people coming in from hot spot countries regardless of what their passport says.

But what about those who want to return or need to return, should they be abandoned?
I was in Phuket with my family in December 2004 when we were hit with the Tsunami, my daughter was only 10 months old and drinking water was stripped bare in the supermarkets within hours.
I was lucky as I had stayed at British nationals hotel on previous occasions, we were evacuated to his home further inland. Plus we have family in Thailand and they organised to get us back to Bangkok. It was not until the 2nd January before the British embassy contacted me regarding an evacuation flight.

My wife and children would of been allowed to enter Thailand when the UK was a hotspot as they have dual nationality and would of been allowed to enter, as long as they followed the protocol set by the Thai government. I personally think its wrong to prevent a citizen returning to their home country but I would expect them to follow the quarantine protocol.

@gks , sorry I have to disagree with your stance. You weren't coming from a Covid-19 variant hot spot! You weren't potentially carrying a plague that was easily transmitted through the air. You were trying to flee a zone that was throne into disaster by the elements.

You had little to no warning of the tsunami and could not have foreseen any difficulties with travel.

Those people who flew from Australia back to these hotspot regions had to have been aware of the possible dangers and chose to do so anyway.

In my opinion - apples and oranges...

There are some people here in Canada complaining that they are now separated from their spouses by this ban. One had the audacity to say that his arranged spouse, who was to come here soon and when she gets permission from immigration, would be delayed by this ban. Heavens, not even cohabited yet but they are "cruelly separated"

Couldn't agree more @CanadianLori , this has been going on long enough for people to realise that if they should leave their country, for whatever reason, they will probably have problems if they return, or try to return.

But there lies the problem. The Australian government imposed a blanket ban on all their citizens and permanent residents from leaving Australia through this pandemic. I don't think its a case of their citizen's actually flew into a hotspot region, they haven't been allowed to travel internationally anyways. They were already there and as Australian citizen's, they are just wanting to return home. If they were allowed to travel freely, then I would understand the Australian governments stance, but this is not the case.

So, they must have been there a long time, might as well stay a bit longer now until its all over.;)

I assume up till now they weren't that bothered, now India is having real problems they want to get out.
