The worst things about councils/gov etc is that you can go around in big circles and always end up where you started in the first place, i don't go to councils meeting because of this reason, you don't get straight answers, some things that needs to be sorted which can be very simple to sort usally ends up being a mountain instead for being a mole hill and somethings which i've reported to councils don't even get done but are a problem and no one seem's to care in todays world, so i've basically given up on most things now

I must admit to being that kind of person my self.
Sit back and make the bullets for other people to fire.
I'm pretty sure most of us don't really know what goes on in those meetings and there is a reluctance to get involved personally.

I served as a Parish Councillor in my village for 15 years, none of us were political minded, we just wanted to do our best for the local community.

We usually vote for labour but this time we voted liberal democrats, never Tories. We got a lot of leaflets for the lib dems and Tories but the labour ones they didn't bother until a few days before. We always do a postal vote so by that time it was too late for the labour ones. We had 3 different ones to vote for this time because there wasn't any last year. Well the Tories got in but it's always been like that here for Worcestershire. Personally I wouldn't vote if it wasn't for hubby saying that i should.

The person who was running for the lib dems lives locally and has been doing a lot to make our neighbourhood a better place that's why we voted for him.

What was the labour party thinking in appointing Dr Paul Williams as their candidate for the Hartlepool by election. He was a remain campaigner and an advocate for a second referendum while the MP for Stockton South, which resulted in him losing his seat. So the Labour party then put him up for candidate for Hartlepool, which happened to have one the highest leaving votes in the country.

The candidiate I voted for won his seat - democracy does work after all.

There is a lot in the media about how could Labour have done so well in Wales - when they have bombed elsewhere. The answer is simple - the way that Mark has dealt with the pandemic - when it hit the fan - he made the right call.

and here is Mark going through his acceptance speech. The bloke on the left is Captain Beaney - he put up some fierce competition apparently. The UK voting system is fab-u-lous - a true democracy - where anyone can put themselves forward - I love it

I am confused by the Scottish result, the SNP are one seat short of a majority so why is Sturgeon claiming victory? Same goes for Wales, it's a draw there too. Surely Sturgeon is powerless?

In the past general elections it was always a bad thing if we got a hung parliament or a tiny majority.

Is it different in Scotland and Wales?

I think the SNP are relying on support for a referendum on independence from the greens.
She might not say that independence is her no1 aim, but it always has been and I think it probably still is.

I was thinking the same as you @JWK but Mr S has just explained she's claiming victory because she has the biggest party. So now I'm thinking what's the point of voting?

Independence is all she thinks and talks about @pete followed by re-entry to the EU. The EU have already said that's very unlikely. Many Scots are totally fed up with her independence obsession and I don't think, even if it went to a vote, she would get what she wants. Her own party members are fed up with her too.

I must admit that I haven't studied the economy of Scotland but I can't see how they can survive financially.

At one time there was high revenue from North Sea oil/gas (arguable as to whether they could claim it) but production has dropped to about 15% of that in 2001 and although Brent Crude went very high about 10 years ago oil prices are unlikely to every reach that high again (now about half that price but still a fair amount). At times, production costs go higher than the Brent Crude price because it is so difficult to do it cheaply due to weather conditions.

Are they also planning to reinstate Hadrian's Wall :heehee:. Of course, independence will create jobs as they will need a Border Force

If Scotland and (remainder of) the UK come to negotiating a 'Withdrawal Agreement', surely the UK will get to keep a share of the oil? (Like the EU kept a share of the UK's fish).

And Scotland will have to pay us their share of any debts and future liabilities, plus the UK will get to keep all the assets? (Like what happened when the UK left the EU). N.B. That would include their share of what we are paying to the EU.
