Thanks for the offer @pete. Got this from ebay for £17.99, about 2 ft high. Expensive I know but wanted something big enough to make an impact

Anyway, I reckon your nana has been forced, to elongate the leaves and make it taller, thereby getting a higher price;)

            This is my measly specimen.

Doesn't everyone have a stainless steel spade? Next time for scale I'll get my under gardener to use the ride on mower ...

Too late to get a photo of my new acquisition now, but things are looking up over here. Gamm Vert, the local GC, had nice little plants for €12. The first 3 years will be the trickiest...
Meanwhile, Maurice II, as he's fondly known, is pushing up new leaves. I suspect it's residual energy. I'll believe he's going to make when I see roots bursting out of the pot.

I get mine from Jungle Seeds. I thought they retired years ago and stopped doing plants, but they seem to have carried on with a few stalwarts (lots of Brugs to tempt you ...) ... always had very good quality, but they aren't cheap.

Ensete maurelii and E. montbeliardii (more upright) £16.95 for 1L (and there will be carriage on top of that)

                    Plants

I remember that too. From memory he chopped the top of, "scored" the stump, and got some shoots off each quadrant, and then had a worrying moment when it came time to divide them up. I expect the thread is still on here somewhere?

Hello Kristen! How lovely to hear from you. I've gone with gut feeling and potted him up as is. The pot's in the utility room for the next few nights which will be hovering around 5C :yikes:, then it should warm up enough to stimulate new roots from the basal plate. The residual energy is pushing up growth from the middle, so all is not lost :)
Can we have an update on your lovely garden, please?
ETA...Having just read further down, I see an update :dbgrtmb: I may be gone some time ...

I thought you were "down South" ... nearly as chilly as here. Daft for late May.

I know, I know....the coldest Spring here for centuries, according to the locals :) On the bright side, the spring bulbs lasted for ages and now the roses, iris and paeonies are revelling in the cooler conditions. EDF too

Yup, here too - longest Daff season that I can remember ... although I think the Cherry blossom was poor this year. And the magnolias got slaughtered (well .. ."browned off") by the cold. Occupational hazard for Magnolias ... and I have a struggle every year with Hydrangeas. So much for Intelligent Design ... they bud-break so early they almost always lose the lot and have to waste energy starting again. I fleece them, but if only global warming would get a wiggle on it would save me that job.

Maybe Global Warming is only over in the East? Japan recorded the earliest cherry blossom bloom since records began ... back in 812 !! Presumably the emperor, back then, said "Make a note" and no one thought to say stop

 Japanese efficiency! The French could use some....
The magnolias (and wisteria) here managed to flower just before the frost hit, so it was the new leaves that burned. They've bounced back now, though :phew: I mostly gave up on mophead and lacecap hydrangeas ages ago. They look appallingly sad and droopy during the summer, even in the shade. As for fleecing them....:roflol::roflol::roflol:
I don't think global warming is quite what we've been led to expect. Extreme weather events seem to be what we'll be getting more of. I give it 20 years and it'll be like Mars! Still don't subscribe to the idea that it's all my fault, though
