No don't do that, new flower trusses form from the stem at the top

I know you will be quite attached to these plants but pete's advice is for the best. Keep one pot if you must but buying another smaller plant will do better in the long run. Don't put more than one tomato plant in a pot by the way :blue thumb:

OK thanks everyone. I'm not going to bother with them any more. They're not for me. Got too much other stuff going on growing wise! I'm sure home grown are far more fabulous than store bought [thinking back to my Grandad's they certainly were delicious] but that's the way forward for me now. I'm giving up!!
Right - time to get ready for the office. Enjoy your day everyone.

PS - Pete I didn't start them off too early - Aldi did!! Lol. I just bought them too early perhaps. ::gaah::rolleyespink:

        5 degrees tonight!!!

My plants that have been outside a good 2 weeks now are still clinging on. A few have lost their growing meristems to slugs/snails but they are sprouting at the sides. They are very stocky and have a purple tinge but overall don't look too bad - all things considered. I feel like if they can make it through tonight we might be over the worst. These are stressful gardening days though... :rolleyespink: Anyone else got their tomatoes out and sharing the angst?

Showing 4 deg C for me and yesterday the BBC forecast was for 3 deg C.

No tomatoes out yet, but I'm earthing up and fleecing the spuds at my edge of village plot where it will be even colder.

4 degrees forecast here tonight. My tomatoes are in an unheated greenhouse so I can fleece and cross fingers. Have just filled up all my watering cans and put them next to the plants, hoping they will act as little hot water bottles when night falls.

Good idea - gave me the idea to cover each plant with a flower pot or bucket tonight - might just make a difference, even though they mostly have drainage holes so who knows..

My Tamarillo seeds have germinated outdoors and are about 3cms tall. but I didn't plant them until mid April.

Tamarillo are delicious, I have had these in Colombia! Do you grow them in the UK? Or where are you growing them and do you get fruit? ahhh, then I saw you are based in the Algarve : ) do you get a good crop?

Hello Cynthia and welcome to the forum.

This is my first time trying these ... but I shall have to wait a while to know how they taste. As they are trees, I may have quite a wait but I will post results here.

I found they just grow massive leaves on a central stem, and then only branch when the first flowers appear, in a similar way to how Brugs grow from seed.
First flowers on mine were 6ft plus off the ground, its not called the tree tomato to for nothing, after that you get like an umbrella effect as the crown keeps dividing at every flower.

My Toms are in a cold frame now and have been for a few days, cant mess around with them any longer, but night temps here are only supposed to get to 8 or 9 C.
If its more settled I'll be planting out next week some time.
