WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2021

Planted up the 2 hanging baskets with trailing geraniums, fuchsias and eurigeron daisies.

 

I've been taking up lots of almost finished Forgetmenots, they are big this year and are even smothering the weeds.
I had to go and get some more compost because I had none left, and then I planted up some summer tubs.

 

Hi all! First time posting on this thread but I’ve loved hearing all your gardening jobs! I potted on my tomato plants and basil seedings tonight. I am planning on buying a little temp. plastic greenhouse for them at the weekend so they have a hope of surviving the summer here.

I think the plant you got in error looks lovely too. I’ve had a mis-sold surprise this week too. I bought a Bowles Mauve wallflower to get a purple perennial, but now flowers have opened and it’s red!:

 

Good luck with your tomatos and basil @SuzFlowers I'd be interested to hear how you get on with a temp greenhouse - I'm considering one for next year but not sure how it'll stand up to the dogs.

My chrysanthemums arrived so they got potted up straight away - they arrived in the middle of a downpour because of course they did lol

I managed to grow two little moonflower vines and a "sensitive plant" seedling - its got six tiny leaves and is probably getting annoyed with me poking it to make it close up (its addictive) lol. Still no four o'clocks but I'm determined to get one eventually.

@SuzFlowers Hello and welcome to GC.

The worst thing with the incorrect seed is I only do perennial evergreen as things can bloom here year round. I tried Bowles Mauve from seed with zero success! The red is very nice.

@EmmaJane I can't get Four O'clocks to germinate for love nor money and they grow wild here!

 

@JWK My goodness, I wouldn't want to be you planting all that ... do you have space?

 

Just finished planting up a border in the front garden.Put cosmos, verbena bonerenses and some Snapdragons.

 

Nice and overcast this morning so thought I'd make a start on trimming the Box hedging.Usually wait for Derby Day but there is a fair bit to do...only done 2 short runs and now I can't straighten up. I'll be doing it in shifts..

Who's stupid idea was it to fill my garden up with box hedging..

 

I emptied my Compost Bin, sifted it and bagged it up for 2022 season.

I found some glass, stones & plastic in it. Now own up who's been putting rubbish in my bin. I have an idea as there's some dodgy people on this forum

 

Planted Nepeta 'Kit Cat', Eryngiums 'Silver Ghost' and 'Neptune's Gold' in my new border. Watered them and all my plants in 9cm pots. Can't wait for the Lathyrus latifolius 'Albus' to arrive from Naturescape, once those 2 have been planted then I can start adding taller plants to the back of the border like actaea, cirsium and alcea. I'm a bit annoyed with myself for not moving the eupatoriums and veronicastrum to the back, but so many plants will probably be moved around, added, removed and planted somewhere else in the next few years anyway! Rubbish photos but you get the idea...

@Nikolaos I have just sown some seeds of Eryngium silver ghost. Hopefully they will germinate

Had a full day of sunshine today so worked like a donkey at the allotment this morning then once home mowed the lawn and weeded the borders. Planted out lots of Acidanthera that had started off well in the greenhouse and some Nicotiana alata. The Nigella papillosa I sown last week have germinated already
Noticed I have an intruder in the greenhouse, a slimy trail has been left but can't find the little blighter
I think the weather combination of wet and warm has beefed up the snails and slugs here this year as I have a demolished Dahlia already and one salvia can't get going at all so may have to cover them to give them half a chance.

 

I've been planting some summer tubs.
I put a mixture in the tubs - Nemesia, Diascia, Felicia, Pelargonium (from cuttings taken last autumn), Alyssum, Viola, Callibrachoa, Petunia (because late partner Beryl liked them) Impatiens, Begonia semperflorens, and Nasturtiums (grown from seeds) and Nepeta ...
Here are a few photos, but I have more than this. They look a bit sparse at the moment but will fill out as the plants grow ...







I did them on the patio and then carried them to their summer positions, but they were very heavy. I should have done them where they were to be but didn't think of that until it was too late ... back is bad now
