What is Looking Good in June 2021

Hello @Victoria yes my dear friend its been raining heavily for a couple of hours but I have it on good authority that it will cease at 2.45pm and then we have a lovely weekend of sunshine and Roses

 

Irises have been flowering at different times. The large bunches of 'black' ones have already started to go over (showed them last month). I don't know how much difference the varieties have in flowering times but the black are shorter than the others.

We have a number of large bunches of sibirica that vary from pale blue to mauve.

 

All the early Spring flowering Clematis finished a month ago. Now the others are only just starting.












The Allium siculum have gone mad this year and we have been trying to dig most of them out. We reckon on having removed a couple of thousand already but think it will now become a regular problem. We love the flowers but we shall remove them before they go to seed. The problem is that they have come up through lots of other plants.


The Aquilegia have only just started coming back after losing almost 6,000 of them seven years ago when Aquilegia downy mildew hit this country (still not curable). It completely obliterated the National Collection. These are the wild variety but it's good to see them back.


We tend to let self seeded plants stay where they are if they don't get in the way. We like this that has grown in the entrance of our driveway.

 

Other things are just getting going. These are the first opening of a lot of them.

This rose is outside the back door (a long bed of about 20 of them) and are highly scented. They have been there about 70 years but I don't know what variety they are. During the summer there are masses of flowers and they end up in very large hips.

I know I say that I'm a devout Luddite and don't use technology but some things come in handy. My neighbours wouldn't like it if I used a sound scarer to keep the pigeons off our veg (the farmer has a couple in the field behind us) so I don't play any sound from these CD's but they still scare the pigeons
