WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2021

Half assembled my new tool shed - ran out of time again. Roof felt and window still to be installed and the front needs a lick of paint. Funnily enough the shed comes pre treated and its pre treated colour matches all my other garden furniture. If you look at the tool shed - the side has already been painted by me in my preferred colour and the front is the colour it arrives - this will be the final panel that needs to be painted. As you can see, it's next to the potting shed on one of my fence post bases:

 

Planted Lythrum salicaria and Cirsium rivulare 'Atropurpureum' in my new border. The first was a pleasure of a quick little job as the Purple Loosestrife doesn't need any soil amendment in my heavy clay. Wish all plants were that easy! Good job I planted the thistle as it was incredibly potbound, took me a few minutes to untangle the almost solid mass of roots! I've almost finished that area of the border, just need to reposition the caryopteris I stupidly planted in the wrong place yesterday. Watered my Deutzia scabra, it'll be flowering and smothered in bees soon.

Yesterday planted out sweetcorn, some sun flowers and a couple of squashes. Later picked strawberries and potted up some lupins.
Today just about to go out and plant up first of the cucumbers and get pots ready for the other cucumber and the melons. The soil can warm through the day and then pot up tonight. These will be grown in a mix of Aldi peat free compost and garden soil.

 

Not much again as very busy with resin projects. Yesterday, I moved a couple of Toadflax from the patio bed to the side garden and dead headed my Geums. Had a wander around the garden looking at stuff and contemplating. Spotted a Painted Lady butterfly. Saw them last year, too. They are a new addition to the wildlife, possibly because of the large nettle patches. Last year there was hardly any Ragwort and I was seriously worried the Cinnebars had eaten themselves out of a home. This year it seems to have recovered and there is lots of it. Saw a Cinnebar moth last week. We also saw what we think is a Linnet a few days ago,but not seen it since. Never actually seen one before.

 

It's always so lovely when a new species starts visiting, isn't it? Last year I had Orange Tips, Gatekeepers and a Meadow Brown visit for the first time, I just thought it was magical!

Just came in from cutting back the Brugmansia so you can walk under it and the three Hibiscus under it, It is 26c so time to go indoors.

Yesterday cut the Salvia farineace back by half, pulled up the Cerinthe which were too leggy for my liking and deadheaded some Pelagoniums.
