Epiphyllum etc.

Does anyone remember Dave Poole, he sent me this as a cutting some years ago.


Another night bloomer, Echinopsis.

 

They are beautiful blooms @pete. Doesn't the Echinopsis have a lovely scent ? it's a shame the flowers are so short lived.
Do you feed them with anything ?
My cacti are hopeless this year. I think they need repotting.

 

They are fantastic flowers as you say Michael, always seem to be perfect when they open even if the plant looks a bit tatty.
Not a good photographer so I very rarely capture just how amazing they are in the flesh.
A lot of mine are a bit neglected, but I am trying to sort them out a bit.
I only feed occasionally and sporadically, I'm taking cuttings of some and discarding the old plant in some cases.

 

Dave Poole I think. He lived down the SW coast almost on the beach I think.
Thinking about it he might have lived in Poole
He had a parrot.

 

I remember him, DaveP from Devon. Had a lovely garden and liked Billbergia nutans.

I only feed them once in the springtime @pete and they usually do well. I haven't done it this year though.
I find cacti can take a lot of neglect and some even thrive on it, but there comes a time when they won't take any more. It's a good idea to take cuttings, otherwise they seem to deteriorate.

Is your cactus Echinopsis eyriesii, it looks like mine.
I've got a red Epiphyllum and last year someone gave me a cutting of a yellow one. I think it's developing buds.

 

I grew the remaining echonopsis that I have from mixed seed a long time ago.
So I don't really know any of the names.
Holly gate hybrids springs to mind, or maybe that was the echinocereus I grew a lot of those at the same time. This is another echinops that I grew at the same time.

 

A yellow epiphyllum and red one sounds good, I've got a large pink one, again from seed.

2008, was it that long ago.

 

Amazing how time goes by! I got Billbergia nutans from him, he grew it outside. He would laugh how mine has expanded. I corresponded with him for a while. He had some health issues, I think Asthma.
