@Jo Williams please only worry about wild life eating berries/fruit/nuts, whatever, if you want to eat them instead.

You'll see posts about people with cherry trees getting frustrated with birds poaching all the cherries before they are even ripe and at least a few can be grabbed for eating before they are all gone. Or rabbits eating or chomping off the tops of veggies that were hopefully going into a salad for the human!

So I think that is why @pete probably wondered why you might want to save them from the birds.

It's a bit of a battle between humans and wild life when it comes to gardens. Me, I never get mature crabapples to make jelly because the squirrels steal them all.

I don't know the plant in the discussion but I'm usually game to try anything. Well, until I'd tried buckthorn berries thinking they were hawthorn. Luckily I only had a few as it turns out they are poisonous

So are the berries edible? That is a question I'd like to hear answered.

We planted our Amelanchier "Rainbow Pillar" for the exact purpose of being eaten by birds. They ARE edible for humans as well and you can make jam out of them, but for us they serve as a kind of decoy to keep the birds busy and away from our more precious plants.
