Can anyone help please? Something is eating a newly planted rose. Similar chunks are on a nearby Honeysuckle. No other plants in the garden are affected. Any ideas what I should do? I can't find any pests on the rose other than ants and aphids (which I'm squishing). Help please?

Hi and Welcome to the Forum,

It could be one or all of several pests, Caterpillars the most likely , possibly some holes created by the Leaf Cutter Bees and assuming they were potted roses you planted could be Vine Weevil.

Best to keep inspecting the underside of the leafs and around the base of the plants.

Caterpillars usually easy to spot plus their small black droppings on the leaves are usually quiet obvious.

Doubt you will see a Bee cutting the leaf, which do leave quiet even holes.

Same with the Vine Weevil which mainly come out after sunset, though they tend to just notch the edges of the leaves.

The first two will likely stop damaging the leaves in a week or two, but the Weevil needs a bit more attention, if they are around.

The plant will survive the leaf damage, if not looking good, but just give it plenty of water and some fertilizer if not recently used when planting.
A Seaweed Extract feed may also help them recover.

    Thanks Ricky101
I thought it could be any of those, but I was hoping someone could be certain. The rose came from David Austin Roses about 3 weeks ago and I planted it more or less straight away. Nothing in pots. No black droppings. Bees, possibly, but the notches look like vine weevil from my google search. I'm afraid that my lovely new rambling rose is going to be decimated or worse other plants in the garden that we've just put in after a huge project.
    Thanks for your reply.

    Hi,

Doubt they will Decimate your plants, just that it looks unsightly for this season or until they put out new leaves.

Often by the time you notice the leaf damage the pest has already gone, the Bees and Caterpillars are little to worry about.

Lots of info about VW in some recents forum posts and the web.
Impossible to say where they came from but do check to actually see them before worring about them. At this time of year its just the adult causing the damage.
