Being about 100th generation Scottish I vote that we call the orange skinned much bigger root veg:) turnip. The English call this swede. I think the name neep comes from new turnip as it arrived in Scotland later than, it’s to my mind, revolting white relative? So we call the orange version both neep and turnip but not swede.
The traditional way of eating turnip in Scotland is “ bashed neeps” bashed being another word for mashed. If the turnip is not ancient and not the size of a flaming football which is what you mainly get offered in the shops it is a really nice vegetable with lots of butter and black pepper. You can also roast it cut into quite thick slices and cooked round a joint of some description. Like you would cook roast parsnip. The white turnip you do not see regularly in the shops up here. Not fit to be given house room in my opinion and is does not bash well. Reading this back it still sounds a little confusing and I am meant to know what I am talking about!
We have many many different meaning for things. One of the most confusing for the English is messages. I am off for a daunder to get the messages this morning........I am walking to get the shopping after I have put the bucket out.... dust bin. It is dreich......ghastly weather so I am likely to get faire drookit ....very wet!
Shiney and sandy ground we call mashed potato and turnip clapshot.. why I wonder does this sound revolting to me?:).
Having said all this no doubt things can get even more confusing for our English cousins with some words in the likes of Aberdeen not having the same meaning in say Edinburgh or Glasgow. Vive la Difference from someone who counts themselves both Scottish and British!

@hailbopp I'm still practicing the Scottish way of life having moved here just under five years ago.

It isn't easy shopping for swede here when it's called a turnip and turnips are also called turnip. I don't like turnip but I like turnip....I mean swede.:heehee: It's good mashed together with carrots. Assuming they are called carrots. ;)

Looking after hubby after his hernia repair operation yesterday, making sure that he doesn't do anything stupid and doing everything else as well.

Goodness me .....what about your back!! I thought you said that you have issues with it.....no wonder!! Having to put his trousers , socks and shoes on him won't help it!!

My brother is terribly disabled but he can manage Ok ( ish) just takes him a lot longer. There are many self help aids for dressing yourself available.

Think of your back, surely you won't be much use to him if it 'goes '. I though you were the same age...?

Was his inability to dress himself linked to his previous hernia issues ,if so then hopefully you'll be unemployed now!!

A true story about things not being easy in Scotland. %o years or so, I was in Nairn, and needed a "number 1" Finding a public toilet was easy. The difficult thing was knowing which door to enter. The letters "SD" were on one, and "DD" on the others. I'm only glad the my late Uncle, a true Highlander was with me to tell me which one was for males, and which was for females....

I wonder if the true scots on here know which was which? :dunno:

Thanks but my back isn't too bad, it just aches a lot sometimes.i can find ways around how to do things.
It could be the hernia that was stopping him because he feels better with his right leg that he couldn't move so well and pain in it.just have to wait and see.
He's 6 months older than me, his birthday is in november and mine is in march.:)

Some of my retirement time is spent solving dilemmas which have baffled philosophers throughout the ages.
This week I have been on Amazon, and ordered a chicken, and an egg.

                      I´ll let you know ...

We philosophers get scant praise for all the work we do, but if we all went on strike - what would you do then, huh ? !

The day did not begin well.
I woke to find I was sharing the mosquito net with a mosquito.
Trapping it between the folds of the net and squashing it, I noted that it had had it´s breakfast.

A text on my ´phone told me that my language tutor can´t meet this week-end, so I shall be falling behind with the local gossip, and bereft of an explanation of a Spanish proverb, "En casa del herrero, cuchillo de palo." In the blacksmith´s house, are wooden knives.
Naturally this saying has no more to do with blacksmiths or knives than a busman´s holiday has to a clippy´s vacation, and I´m fascinated to find a kernel of wisdom in its enigmatic depths.
I´m also tempted to carve a wooden knife and hang it over the door.

The waiter in my local bar plays the violin, and yesterday I introduced him to Cole Porter´s "Every Time We Say Goodbye," the Peggy Lee version, on his smartphone. I think it will sound great on the fiddle, and I´m practicing the ukulele chords so we can have a jam. The woman who owns the bar has a tenor sax, and another friend has a new cajon, so I´m hoping we´re onto something good.

Forecast is for 99F today, 102F tomorrow, and around 80F at night.
Spain remains the coolest place to be.
