Been waiting for 10 mins for your questions but still nothing ??

 

Ok first dumb question. I've been using multi purpose compost. Is there other type I can use for growing veg?

You can use most MPC or the John Innes Composts for indoor pots, but outdoors probably best and cheaper to plant direct into garden soil if you have such a space ?

MPC compost can dry out quicker than the John Innnes which being soil based is heavier.

With MCP you have the added complication of peat based and non peat types but will let others go into that.

What fruit and veg are you looking to grow, indoors or out ?

 

I want to plant potatoes outside but maybe try growing peppers or chillies inside. No earth outside just planting beds.

Still time for peppers and chilles if you can find some young plants, MPC would be best for them.
There is a thread just for Chillies 2021 where you might find some good tips etc.

For Tatties you probably will be too late to buy 'seed' potatoes, but we planted some supermarket salad ones a couple of weeks ago and they soon sprouted.
They will grow in almost anything but will take up a lot of space in planting bed. ( do you mean raised bed ?)
A lot of folk grow them in sacks specially made for tatties.

The only dumb question is the one that is never asked.

Only an opinion, to which quite a few will disagree, is that the best compost to use is the one made from the waste in your own garden. Thats what I've been doing for years, and always have far too much of it. No problems with any of the edibles I grow, and added to that, it seems somehow more ecological.

@Verygreen welcome to the forum. I believe most of us grow peppers/chillies in pots. That way you can move them wherever the conditions are best.

I grew potatoes a couple of times. The first time I didn't want to spend a lot of money so I used an old laundry basket, lined with landscape cloth and filled with whatever soil I could find. The cheapest is garden soil so I probably just used that. It was fun!

 

Welcome @Verygreen I´m new to gardening and this forum too, but I was fortunate to take over an existing garden.
Sounds like you are interested in growing things to eat, in a garden not yet designed for that purpose -- do you have any long-term plans ?
Potatoes and chillies are a great start, all you need is an onion and you can make my favourite Spanish dish, patatas al pobre.
