I'm going to say it again - the job of the vaccine is to stop people dying - it's not to stop infection or to stop people feeling poorly. It's a bonus that jabbed people are not as transmissible and that some of them don't feel ill.

    This headline from the beeb:

Coronavirus cases in the UK have risen above 30,000 for first time since January, official figures show.

    Shouldn't this read:

On Monday an additional 30,000 people gained immunity from Covid-19, the highest daily rate of natural immunity since January, official figures show.

The media are still scaring people silly.

Agreed, especially around the Delta variant, yet the government data speaks a different story....

So the percentage of cases resulting in fatality is 0.2% at most - 0.4% when extrapolated to the within 28-days. So that is 0.4% of cases, so the percentage per head of population must be so small that there are not enough zeros on a calculator to show it.

The govt is predicting that up to 100,000/day will catch it by August. Their gamble is that a much smaller proportion will need hospital treatment compared to the previous two waves.

A scientific boffin confirmed last night that the bodies immune response is the same whether jab or infection. I wonder how close we would be to herd immunity when you add up vaccinated and naturally immune people? It must be in the 90%'s now surely?

I reckon this is Boris's approach - let her rip - we have herd immunity. I wish he would just come out and say it.

That seems to prove the point that the vaccines limit the effects of the virus, but don't stop you catching it. The holiday season starts here this week. Cue the 4th wave at the end of July

He cant say it because it was the original "plan" and they got caned over it by the opposition and the press.
Obviously the difference is now the vaccine, but if you mention "herd immunity" it would be political suicide.

I think we just dont have "herd immunity" to the Indian variant, but we do now have some resistance in the community, which is something we never had at the beginning.

Apart from anything else, it's the terminology that's so offensive. Implying that people are cattle! Surely the government has access to educated civil servants or publicity lickspittles who could have come up with something less offensive? It's quite a contrast to our dear Pres's appeals to concitoyen(nes) implying that we're all in it together and avoiding a derogatory approach.

Wasn't it Domino who said that was the original plan - a disgruntled ex employee?

To be fair - no one knew anything about the virus - or how best to react - it's been a steep learning curve and hopefully one which we will learn from and which will put us a better position to deal with any virus's that turn up in the future.

Saw on the TV the other day that 17,000 people a year pass on from flu - and that virus mutates just like Covid-19. A sign of what we will have to live with perhaps?

I think " herd Immunity" its a normally accepted term.

Even a doctor, who comes on the TV regularly, said that at the moment the amount of people dying from covid at the moment is tiny compared to other reasons and its reaching the time when we should stop issuing reports regarding covid deaths.

That would deprive the part of the herd that revels in doom and gloom of their daily fix! But let's face it, a lot of people have become immune to the detailed reports, if not the virus. HarryS's post proves that it's still ever-present, just not fatal. Probably because all the older, vulnerable people are either dead or have survived it.

That was how the Spanish Flu epidemic finished, natural immunity, obviously not the best outcome but that was how things were sorted out naturally in those days.

Mr S is about to watch the England/Denmark match and Wembley is at full spectator capacity. Hmmm, that's sure to raise the Covid figures.

Which would be fine, their choice etc., as long as the long-suffering NHS staff don't bear the brunt. They must surely be near the end of their tethers?
