    We're still in "stage two" of lockdown. This means zero indoor dining and the 2 meter rule and masks will be mandatory for another 3 weeks at minimum.

    My region had 3 new cases today and this seems to be the average. There are 450K people in this region.

    I think the politicians are just loving the control and the doctors are backing them up!

    And, people can fly to the states for casual visits but no one is allowed to drive over without it being essential travel. So if you're rich you can afford to fly over any time but us peasants who just want to drive and do a little cross border shopping, aren't allowed. Vaccinated or not!

    Maybe I should have posted this in latest mooooan.....

      Given the capacity is running at 60k people, it will be a relatively small percentage of those who catch it - it will then be an even smaller percentage that actually require hospitalisation - if the NHS can't cope with a few hundred sick people, then we have a bigger problem than a virus.

        Sounds just like the illogical rulings in Europe, Lori. The governments are juggling caution with keeping economies afloat :dunno:

          Wembley holds 90,000 so that's 75% capacity. Still will be packed closely.

            During this crisis there has been a lot of emphasis on how well the NHS has coped, but mostly its been more a case of muddling through by stopping doing everything else.

            They now say it might take 10yrs for them to catch up.

            But the truth, in my mind, is the NHS was way behind in everything before this all started, the waiting lists were getting longer all the time with people waiting years for routine work to be done.

            Its an organisation that you can throw money at, it will soak it up, and things will not get any better.

                  Every year, without fail, the NHS were screaming that they were struggling with the flu season - long before Covid. Having been in prolonged and fairly recent contact with their services, even I could see that there are significant problems brought about by the way things are organised both within the NHS and externally.

                  It starts with community care as far as I am concerned - GP's have been reducing in number for decades, care homes being privatised means that not everyone can afford them and district nursing/domiciliary care has also been reduced. That all means that vulnerable people are more likely to get ill either by having a fall, accident or forgetting to take medication; they then land up in hospital. Those who may have gone into hospital fully fit but then find themselves in a situation where they need care/support can't get out of hospital because the at-home care is so over-stretched. In my own case, it took three weeks of me being at the point where I was medically well enough to leave hospital, but I couldn't leave because they couldn't arrange a care package for me at home. In the end, I had to speak with the directors of the hospital and told them that they either got me home in an ambulance and let Mrs C take care of me, or I would phone a friend to literally buy a wheelchair with my credit card and come to get me home. I wasn't alone either, that was played out with a lot of people.

                  Ambulances are also so overstretched, not only to get people into hospital, but also to move them between hospitals or take them home - that adds further pressure on hospitals.

                  The blunt truth is that the population of this country has increased by roughly 10 million since 2000, yet infrastructure such as GP's, hospitals, care homes, schools, water treatment plants, reservoirs, sewage/drainage treatment, public transport etc etc have all stayed static at best and most have reduced.

                    The odd thing though is that those people who have been preaching/singing at us about masks etc are all of a sudden not worried...

                    Don't think masks would make the slightest difference at Wembley last night. Given that most of those attending are young and likely to have had just one jab at best I can see a surge coming on. Even those fully jabbed don't have immunity and can catch and spread it just the same. Seems we have gone from a cautious approach to virtually back to normal overnight, not a good idea in my view.

                      When our local politician Ralph Atkinson retired, his final words were, "Politics begins with the drains."
                      That, in my opinion, is what a real politician sounds like.

                      I travelled behind the Iron Curtain in the Sixties, and some of the news from England is dreadfully reminiscent of what I found there. In Bucharest, amid the poverty and squalor, I saw my first Lamborghini -- probably a drug dealer or a politician.
                      Possibly both.

                      This might clarify why the arc of my life has described my regression from subject to citizen, citizen to consumer, consumer to punter, punter to immigrant.

                        I would say that politician is correct @Giri - I have been banging on about things like this for years, and don't hide the fact that I voted to leave the EU with immigration being a significant consideration in my decision. I have been called racist, xenophobic, gammon etc yet that couldn't be further from the truth. I have no truck with anyone wishing to come and live here, but the harsh truth is that our infrastructure and housing is not expanding at a sufficient rate to cope. There is zero chance of proper social (council) housing returning as that would knacker the private rental market and the property market all in one, and water/drainage is privatised. We are therefore pretty much at the level we can stand (in fact, we are beyond it)

                          Agreed, it´s not about colour or creed, simple practicalities determine the nature of society. The Chinese have a saying regarding people in a village "getting on" like "pebbles in a bag" smoothing off their spiky bits. The alternative which you have now, in current social conditions, appears to be "rats in a sack."

                            Seeing the behaviours we are seeing (stabbings in London are at an incredible level) spurred on by everyone being cooped up for over a year because of Covid, I genuinely fear that there is going to be some sort of uprising somewhere.
