London weightings are not always guaranteed nowadays and sadly as soon as you cross just outside of the London council boundaries, they cease - a good example is where we live, within the M25, less than a mile from Borough of Hounslow, housing prices the same as London yet if Mrs C transferred from the store she works in (6 miles away) to the one nearest (just over a mile) her wages would drop.

Another big factor now, and a result of covid, is the prices rising in other areas well away from the cities as people have moved outward, wanting to live more rurally.

For decades there has been a general movement here from the mountain to the town, where electricity, employment and facilities were a tempting option.
Now, with sky-high electricity bills, unemployment and the risk of infection the movement is reversing. There are very few gardens in the town, but up on the "Campo" with three growing seasons per year you can grow fruit and veg, and with solar power the air conditioning can run all day.

My garden produces apples, lemons, oranges, plums, peaches, nispera, feijoa, cherimoya, tree tomatoes, pomegranates, persimmon, avocados, grapes, olives, walnuts, almonds, hazel nuts, chestnuts and things I´ve not yet identified -- the man who built the house was a keen gardener, all I do is water and prune.
I´m also permitted to grow marijuana strictly for my own use, as long as I grow it and use it out of public view, and its medicinal properties are of increasing interest.

Spain is a vast country, largely uninhabited, with derelict villages which are becoming viable again. Covid seems to be pointing out how interdependent we are, and how we need to live differently. Perhaps it´s an ill wind that will eventually do some good.

That is our experience in Guildford, over the last year we have had many new families move into our street from London, they are bumping up prices. Our neighbours who sold have gone even further afield so it's a ripple effect with London at the centre. I read Devon and Cornwall are the hot spots now, provided you can work from home it is very attractive.

We gave serious consideration to Norfolk or Wales, but it isn't easy for us as we rent. Having had my rent rise this month, I confess I am starting to get quite bitter about paying through the nose to live somewhere that I would actually rather not be - I have always been a country or small town lad, so living here does my head in. Easier said than done to move though

This province sure isn't fooling around with those who don't get vaccinated!

Quebec will require its citizens to carry a “vaccine passport” as of Sept. 1 that would serve to exclude those who have not received two doses from going to gyms and bars or participating in team sports in COVID-19 hot zones.

“With vaccinations, we have an alternative to generalized lockdowns,” Dubé said. “It will be good for society, education, the economy and the health network.

“It’s quite clear that those who are adequately vaccinated will have a more normal situation. … The people who refuse to get vaccinated, it’s their right, but they must know that in the case of an outbreak or transmission in a certain area, they may have to isolate, they may have to get tested. Or they may not have access to certain activities.”

Quebec will restrict access to “high-contact areas” like gyms and bars, or activities like team sports, Dubé said, and “moderate contact areas” like arts festivals or watching sporting competitions.

Recent surveys show 95 per cent of people who contract COVID-19 in Quebec or are hospitalized are those who have not been fully vaccinated, Dubé said.

“We cannot continue to paralyze, for instance, the health-care network, when people make the choice not to get vaccinated,” he said.

It´s the first fruit of summer noisette, like a plum but with two or three big brown seeds inside which are unbelievably shiny. My nearest tree has two grafted trunks, thanks to Fernando who was into all sorts of grafting. One side has small early fruit, the other side has larger, later fruit.
                  They taste delicious.

According to Google nispero is another name for loquat.

I see @Giri grows Feijoa, which kind of blows the theory that @noisette47 and @Victoria are too hot to get fruit.;)
Also sorry for the thread drift, but I think it has drifted once or twice before.;)

Ha! Saw the photo and Bingo! Eriobotrya/Loquat/Néflier du Japon  But a grafted tree with an extended season, there's posh!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for fruit on the Feijoa this year, @pete. There are 3 playmates and more flowers than I've ever seen before. Think we ought to start a new thread just for exotic fruit? ;) Oh and Victoria and I are definitely hot, but best not shout too loudly about it, hmmm? :roflol:

So, back on track - 50,000 cases a day. Doubling in ??? Number of days...
Surely we are gonna run out of people to get the virus?

I think that is the plan, run out of people getting the virus, if they dont get really ill, its called natural immunity, but its a gamble.
We will see if it pays off, if it does I think there will be lots of other countries doing the same thing.
We need to break out and get on, we have been hiding for 18 months.

Absolutely agree. We have the same thing here. Cottage country in Ontario (middle band of the province between north and south) is seeing a surge in city folks snatching up real estate.

I guess with Corona lock downs, many have decided that not being part of a crowded city is not so hard to deal with after all!

And I agree with @Jenny namaste. Really, aren't we running out of people to test?

Around here the move out of London was going on well before covid was even thought of.
Large office blocks in my town have been bought up by London boroughs, converted to apartments, (not allowed to call them flats anymore), and then they move in tenants that they cant house up there.

And they are not always the most desirable ones, if you get my meaning.

We get stabbings quite often now and drug gangs are becoming the norm.
Not entirely based on that, but its certainly not helping.
